Garth Bruce Holtom
Garth passed with his family at his side on August 6, 2016, ironically this date was his father’s birthday. He was born December 13, 1933 in Harriston, Ontario to Hilda and Bruce Holtom and is predeceased by his parents and younger brother Byrnel.
Graduate of Ryerson University in Marketing, he made a career in Sales & Marketing prior to creating Golden Horseshoe, a Saddlery, Tack and Western Wear Store in Bolton, Ontario in 1966. He owned and successfully operated this business for 18 years and while never learning to ride a horse, the business was one of his greatest achievements.
Garth made many friends during his years in Bolton and enjoyed golfing and curling. He was a Mason with the Lodge in Moorefield, Ontario, and in Bolton was a Rotarian and member / past president of the Bolton Downtown Business Association,
Garth and his wife Lois later moved to Horseshoe Valley where he began a career in Insurance and Financial Planning in the Barrie, Ontario area. They enjoyed the Simcoe County area lifestyle with family and friends for some 25 years before Garth’s health forced him to retire.
Garth had a tremendous love of music throughout his life which in particular provided him with the most peace during his final weeks.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois (formerly Davidson) and his 2 children Bruce (Kim) of Snow Valley, Phyllis (Rene) of Horseshoe Valley, 4 grandchildren Charlotte, Ben, Megan (new husband Eric Bertucci), James and sister in laws Marilyn Brett of Halifax, Nova Scotia and Joy Nicholson of Almonte, Ontario.
Many thanks to the wonderful caring staff of Millcreek Care Centre in Barrie, Ontario which has been Garth’s home for the past 3 years.
For those who wish to make a donation, we would appreciate that it go to the SPCA in Newmarket or World Vision.
Arrangements made by Peaceful Transitions of Barrie, Ontario.
