Funeral Details: Private family arrangements

With deep and abiding sadness, we announce the passing of our father Russell Herbert Gibbons “Russ” on 14 July 2026 at the age of 96.  He grew up in the warmth of a large family in Owen Sound Ontario, son of a WW1 veteran Leonard Garfield and his war bride Louisa.  His 7 siblings all predeceased him.  Russ met his wife Patsy in Owen Sound, married in 1951 and then began a marital partnership that lasted 75 years.  As a family, Pat and Russ move (posted) every 3 or 4 years through a lifetime of rewarding challenges and experiences.

Russ began his professional career in the Canadian Army but quickly found his home in the RCAF as an administration clerk.  His focus on duty was noticed, and an interesting career ensued with multiple posting in Canada and in Germany.  His skills were noted and he was “commissioned from the ranks” and served as an officer for the balance of his career. He held very responsible posts including Base Commander’s EA CFB Borden, Commandant of Air Command Headquarters (staff CO), and executive assistant to the commander Maritime Command Halifax and D/CO junior leadership school CFB Borden.

While his service to our country was truly impressive, his greatest accomplishment was as a father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather.  His support to his wife (Patsy), and three sons; Guy, Bradley, Robert and their spouses was unwavering and constant.  His encouragement was never qualified or conditional, but gentle and always helpful.  His gentle laugh and sense of humour was a favorite for his grandkids; Ryan, Gillian, Scott, Kevin, Sean, Miles, Aaron, Alyssa and Rylan and great grandkids, April, Bennett, Audrey, Russell, Hailey, Addie, Grayden and Garrett.  All will miss him deeply.  His humour was legendary, his dad jokes classic as was his slice in golf which he loved to play.

Russ and Pat retired from the military in 1983 and settled in Alcona Ontario near Lake Simcoe and several golf courses.  Visits to Alcona by the grandkids and great-grand kids were always a highlight as they basked in their unabashed love of family, and Dad jokes.  Russ spent his last years in the Victoria Village Manor Barrie with his loving wife Patsy. The wonderful care of the staff is much appreciated.
