Joan Doris Higgs (née Voelker)

October 6, 1929 - May 10, 2025

Funeral Details: Private family arrangements

It is with great love and fond remembrance that the family of Joan Doris Higgs announces her passing.  Joan was the beloved wife of the late Ken Higgs (January 8, 2025), with whom she would have celebrated 71 years of marriage this year.

Cherished mother of Donald (Jessica McGloin), David (Kathy Mullins), Nancy Ashton (Bradley), and Richard (Dr. Melissa Witty).  Proud and devoted grandmother to Darren and Ryan Ashton (Erin), Daniel, Katie and Mark Higgs (Supriya), Meaghan and Shannon Higgs, and Natalie and Matthew Higgs.

Born October 6, 1929, at Hamilton Mountain Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Joan attended East York Collegiate, where she made lifelong friends and first crossed paths with her future husband, Ken.  She had a passion for education and graduated from teachers’ college to become a gifted kindergarten teacher, working in Scarborough, East York, Peel, and Simcoe Counties in both the Public and Separate School Boards.  She held her teaching certification for over 50 years.

Joan married Ken on May 23, 1953, and together they built a loving home and family.  She deeply enjoyed family gatherings, especially at the cottage, where countless cherished memories were made.

An avid traveler, Joan visited every U.S. state and Canadian province, as well as Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and various parts of Europe.  She had a lifelong love of music, often incorporating it into her teaching.  She also found joy in live theatre, museums, and historical sites.

Joan will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and generosity.  Her gentle nature and willingness to help others touched many lives, both personally and professionally.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Simcoe County, 20 Anne St. S., Barrie, ON (705-722-1066).
