Funeral Details: Private Family Arrangements

Josephine “Josie” (née Scott) McKinnon, age 92, passed away peacefully with family by her side on April 8, 2026.

Born on January 8, 1934, in Belfast, Ireland, to Ellen Muir and Alec Scott. She was the cherished younger sister of Aileen and Mary, and grew up surrounded by family, music, and a strong sense of community.

Josie began her working life at the Belfast Telegraph.  At the age of 21, she made the brave decision to immigrate to Canada, landing first in Montreal before settling in Toronto.  She made her home in the Danforth community, where she built a life defined by hard work, resilience, generosity, and deep connection to others.

She was the beloved mother of Michael (Sheila) and Patricia Shanahan, who were the pride and joy of her life.  Lovingly known as Grandma Josie or Granny to her grandchildren—Matthew (Meghan), Amanda (Marc), and Brendan (Divya)—she was also blessed to spend cherished time with her great-grandchildren, Sloane and Levi, Max, and Noah.

Josie dedicated 37 years of service as a Ward Aide at Providence House, where she became not only a respected colleague but a fierce and compassionate advocate for workers’ rights.  She played a pivotal role in going on strike to bring in the CUPE Union and later served as President of her CUPE local, a lasting testament to her leadership, courage, and commitment to fairness.

Always carrying a smile and a song, Josie truly embraced life.  She loved dancing, walking, exercising, and especially gardening.  Her passion earned her the Best Garden Award from the Upper Beaches Association, and she deeply cherished her home on Lucy Avenue.  She was a kind and caring neighbour, especially treasured by Norman and Jessica, and by the many families around her.  With a children’s parkette next door, Josie became a local legend—always ready with a chocolate bar or sweets for the children who stopped by.

At the age of 50, Josie met the love of her life, James (Jimmy) McKinnon, affectionately known as Grandpa Jimmy.  Together, they embraced adventure, travelling extensively.  At 61, Josie & James became snowbirds, spending joyful winters in Clearwater, Florida.  A devoted sun worshipper, she formed many dear friendships there, including with “Wee” Bert and Cathy Little.  She eagerly participated in line dancing and recreational activities, always welcoming newcomers with warmth and humour.

Josie was a kind, generous, and loving soul whose home was always open to everyone.  She took immense pride in watching her grandchildren grow, graduate from college and university, marry, and build families of their own.  She found joy in music concerts, treasured friendships with Ingrid, Barbara, and Joy, and in the simple happiness of being surrounded by people she loved.

In her later years, Millcreek Care Centre became Josie’s home.  She immersed herself in the community and recreational programs, continuing to live with grace, faith, and engagement.  She was also deeply devoted to our beloved dog, Clover, whom she loved as her own and who remained by her side until her final days.  The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the kind and compassionate staff at Millcreek Care Centre, who cared for Josie with dignity, respect, and love.

Josie will be remembered for her joyful spirit, generosity of heart, strength, distinct laughter, humour, resilience, and unwavering kindness.  Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched, the community she helped build, and the family she loved so deeply.

The family will be holding a private celebration of life in her memory.
