Albert John Hensen

August 10, 1938 - August 7, 2019

Funeral Details: Memorial Visitation at St. John Vianney Church Hall on Monday August 19th (13 Baldwin Lane, Barrie, L4N 2W1) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Memorial Service at 11 a.m.

Albert John Hensen passed away peacefully at his home in Barrie with his beloved wife Sook Hee and son Christian by his side.  Born in Den Haag, Holland, in 1938, Albert was one of two children to Johannes and Johanna Hensen.  As a young boy growing up the Den Haag, Albert was an avid soccer player who played for the Westerkwartier soccer club with his lifelong friend’s Jacques and Frits.  Albert began his journey as a Merchant Marine while studying at the Zeevaartschool in Delfzijl - Holland, which provided him the opportunity to see the world and learn about different cultures. He then settled in Toronto with his first wife Leila Hensen, where he chose to build a better life for his family and himself.  Albert completed his MBA at The University of Western Ontario and then went on to work for PPG Industries.  His career in finance took him to Toronto, Owen Sound and finally to South Korea where he met his second wife Sook Hee.  Albert retired in Barrie with Sook Hee and there he became actively involved in the local community and his church – St. John Vianney.   Albert’s involvement in the local community included The Rotary Club, St. John Vianney Finance Committee, Catholic Family Services and The Refugee Committee at his church.  He enjoyed many outdoor activities such as golfing and cross country skiing with Sook Hee.  Though his soccer playing days were over Albert was an avid fan of European Soccer, and a hopeful fan of the Dutch National Team in the World Cup. He enjoyed to read and was keen about local and global politics and current events. His wit, kindness, charm and intelligence made an impression on all that knew him.  Albert will be forever missed by his wife Sook Hee, son Christian, daughter in-law Jenna Sardo, sister Annelies, nieces Claudia and Leonie, nephews Mark and Erwin as well as their children, and all of his many friends.

Memorial visitation will be held at St. John Vianney Church Hall on Monday August 19th (13 Baldwin Lane, Barrie, L4N 2W1) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by a service in the Church at 11 a.m. to remember and celebrate Albert’s life.  Following the service a reception will be held at the Church Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

From the few times I have had the chance to interact with Albert he was indeed a man of wit, kindness charm and intelligence. Perhaps his best legacy is the same wit, kindness, charm and intelligence he has genetically, and surely with an ounce of dad “teaching” as well, transferred to his son Christian.

Dear Sook Hee, Jenna and Chris,

Words cannot express how sad we are on the loss of Albert. He was a loved, intelligent and great family member. We loved his great dutch sense of humour and the openness on his approach to life. His travelling around the world made him the person which he became. Great conversations, even during the last weeks and visit. We are extremely grateful to have spend time with him especially the last years.
Our hearts are with you in this time of sorrow. Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of Albert. Our thoughts are with you during the ceremony tomorrow.
    Claudia&Mark & Alisa&Jamie
