Brenda Pinder Parsons

September 23, 1962 - April 13, 2019

Funeral Details: Celebration of Life Sunday, September 22 from 2- 4:30 p.m. Words of Remembrance at 3:30 p.m. Gilda's Club Simcoe Muskoka, 10 Quarry Ridge Road, Barrie

With profound grief, we share the news that Brenda passed away on April 13, 2019 at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie.

She was held closely in her final hours by her husband Randy Parsons, her daughter Oriah Ori, her son Jamie Parsons and his partner Jessica Rizzardo, and her dear friend Liz Scott. Many other family and friends were with her in spirit.

Brenda was born in Exeter, Ontario in 1962 to Jim and Elaine Pinder. Sister to Ken Pinder (Kim) and Ann DeVries (Bart). Daughter-in-law to Gerry and Marlene Parsons, and sister-in-law to Wayne Parsons (Kelly) and Kevin Parsons (Laurie).

She was a graduate of the HBA Program, Ivey Business School, Western University ('85). After a successful career in marketing with Drug Trading Company, Boots Drug Stores, and CIBC, her daunting health challenges began in 1993.

Since the dreaded diagnosis, she simply dedicated her time and efforts to selflessly serving others, in ways too numerous to mention here. In particular, she was part of a group of passionate people that helped to realize the dream of establishing Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka. She supported the organization’s building campaign by addressing groups of community members and sharing first-hand accounts of her experience of living with cancer. Brenda also served a full term as volunteer Chair of the Board. Her commitment to “keeping the Red Door open” will remain as an inspiration to all of us.

Brenda avoided the spotlight at all costs, but she made her time with people count.

Meanwhile, she was pursuing a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, until her most recent challenges interrupted her studies.

She jumped at opportunities to travel, was a voracious reader, and truly cherished the simple things in life. But mostly, she loved being a mother and an aunt to some great kids.

Special thanks to the many talented and compassionate healthcare professionals who worked with Brenda on an epic journey - Dr. Mark Vincent and his amazing colleagues at the London Regional Cancer Program, Dr. Anne Souter, and for a short but very important time in Brenda’s life, Dr. Kelly Emerson.

And to the many family and friends that shared and supported Brenda’s excellent adventure, we thank you…although we all seem to recognize that we have received far more from Brenda than we could ever give back to her!

Cremation of Brenda’s body has occurred. We don’t know if that was her wish, because she refused to acknowledge that her illness might cause her to leave this earth before she was ready.

Godspeed love.

For those who would like to make a donation in honour of Brenda, please consider Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka, or the charity of your choice. Thank you.

Brother Randall, she led a 26 year, well fought battle and never a complaint ever peeped. I will miss her tremendously and am fortunate to have so many great memories to reflect on. The only solace I have is knowing that she isn’t suffering any more. She was an inspiration to all of us that were lucky enough to know her.

She was a special person for a long long time – though it should have been longer still. Still her impact was immense, and her legacy is lasting. I weep with you at this loss. May you find measures of comfort and peace in the coming days. 🙏🏼

I’m inspired most in life by those who show us the way, rather than tell us the way. And that’s why Brenda inspired me. Brenda and I were classmates and while it’s true we weren’t the closest of friends at Western, the times we did spend together made me wish we were closer—that’s the kind of person Brenda was—she always made you feel better the more time you spent with her. They say that we should aspire to leave the world a little better after we leave it than when we arrived, and by this measure, (and many others I’d expect), Brenda excelled. I know I’ll be part of a very large club—-those who will miss her, but will smile in their soul when they think of her.

My life is better for knowing Brenda. Yesterday I read something that really touched my heart because it made me think of Brenda. It was something to the effect of…… “whatever you treasured in someone who is gone, then bring those things into your own life”. Brenda was the most giving, positive, selfless, smiling, fun-loving, hard-working people I have had the joy of knowing. And I am going to try to be more like Brenda in my own life.

Randy and family, my heart breaks for you during this most difficult time. But please know how many people treasured Brenda, and how many lives she made better, just for knowing her. I send you peace and love during this difficult time. xo

I met Brenda in Business School in 1984 and saw her from time to time at the formal and informal reunions of the ’85 grad class.

During one of the informal gatherings, I learned of the incredible health journey that Brenda had been on. What amazed me was how peaceful she was with her battle; how confident and optimistic. We spoke for longer that night than we did in our two years together in school. Before leaving, I re-approached her and said something that I don’t commonly say to people: “I think you are beautiful”, before tears welled up for both of us. Later, we exchanged a couple of messages, the last being in 2013 when I asked how she was doing. “Overall life is good – we are very blessed”, she wrote, before telling me that she was “dealing with some health challenges again” but remaining ever so strong and positive. What a remarkably strong spirit she carried and how grateful I am to have been touched by it.

To Randy, Oriah, Jamie and all who loved her, my deepest condolences.

Brenda has had such an amazing impact on this world and has touched so many lives in her very short time here on earth. I’m honoured and blessed to have known Brenda. My deepest sympathies to all of Brenda’s family. Your loss is great and you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I met Brenda in Gr 9, a smiling, effervescent personality. We shared most classes for those 5 years. Our career paths and geography lead us in different directions. Several years ago I had heard of her fight and my heart ached for her. We connected on FB. Four years ago I faced my own challenge with cancer. Brenda graciously answered my questions. So many others were blessed by her too. She will be sorely missed.

    Dear Randy, Jamie and family,
My heart goes out to you at this very difficult time. Brenda’s spirit has always shone so brightly and she continues to inspire me to be a better person. I remember my mom describing Brenda the first time she met her – her warmth and sincerity and all the wonderful work she did in the community. That was many, many years ago and Brenda’s warmth, sincerity and genuine desire to help others only grew. What an amazing woman. What an inspiration. May the love and support of all those who Brenda touched, surround you now.

It was an honour and a privilege to serve on the Board at Gilda’s under Brenda’s leadership. Her commitment to making the lives of those dealing with cancer better, despite her own battle, was inspirational. She will be dearly missed but she was never a victim of the disease. Safe home Brenda.

I am so very saddened by hearing of the passing of Brenda. I am so grateful to have known such a great person, our many talks about life and her thoughtfulness and caring about my well-being even during her fight always made me think of what a wonderful, selfless beautiful woman and spirit she had and was. Her drive to better herself and strengthen the people around her was always present. I hope you are sitting with Ollie by a lake, listening to the sounds of nature. Thinking of all her family and friends she has left behind. I feel truly blessed to have known you, Brenda, you make and made this world better.xoxooxxoxooxox
