Dorothy Beatrice Claudette McDougall, Ph.D

December 26, 1945 - December 10, 2018

Funeral Details: Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Dorion Hall

Dorothy Beatrice Claudette McDougall, PH. D.

Dorothy was born in Rouyn, Quebec to the late Jack and Rose (Bellard) McDougall. She was the youngest of 7 siblings; the late Donald McDougall, Jeannine Churchill, Theresa McGuire, Diane McDougall, and surviving siblings Isabel McLean and Jackie McDougall.

Dorothy is the mother of beloved daughters Sandy Gribbon and Andrea Gribbon (Terry Henderson) and proud grandmother of her cherished grandchildren Tyler Rose Collett and Nathan Collett.

She is and will always be Theo’s Dog-Mother and the Dog-Grandmother of Lily and Bean.

She was and is lovingly connected with a large, extended family - including many nieces and nephews, their children, her former husband Larry Gribbon, and a beautiful community of friends both longstanding and new.

Dorothy earned her Ph.D. in Theology at the Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto and served as a professor there for many years prior to retiring at age 65. Her book, “Cosmos As Primary Sacrament: The Horizon for An Ecological Sacramental Theology” is based on her doctoral thesis.

In word and deed, Dorothy was deeply committed to social, global, and ecological justice. She loved to travel and, in addition to visiting many parts of the world, she made sure to attend milestone events of her extended family members across Canada and the United States.

In her journal she writes, “Forever grateful for the deep and lasting friendships in my life! Honoured to be among them! Thankful to have grown up in a loving and supportive family!"

Words cannot express our depth of gratitude for the goodness found at Hospice Simcoe with its gracious staff, caring volunteers, and lovely surroundings.  Dorothy derived much sustenance from its day programs. Her family is deeply grateful for the comfort given by volunteers and staff, and for the homemade soups.

Flowers gratefully declined. Please donate generously to Hospice Simcoe.

Celebration of Life: Sunday, December 16 at 2:00 pm, Dorion Hall, 227 Sunnidale Road, Barrie, Ontario. Warm thanks to our co-celebrants, Russell Baron and Monica Godin.

Dorothy leaves us with words of wisdom: “Life’s purpose is only one: to learn how to love (especially our enemies)!”

We will remember her wisdom and her wit.

Sandy, I’m so sorry for your loss. You were an amazing support for your mother. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Dorothy, she sounds like an incredibly intelligent, kind, loving mother, grandmother and human being, that she was loved by many and loved many. That is a beautiful life. You are in my thoughts. Much love, Jude xo

Dorothy was an amazing lady and I was blessed to be in her life even though it was short. My condolences to the family who many I got to meet the last weeks. I am so sorry that I didn’t know about today’s service until tonight. I so would have come to the celebration of life to honour Dorothy and see the family. The picture from Linda is beautiful. Take care all.
