Funeral Details: Private Family Arrangements

Douglas, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2024, at the Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Orillia, Ontario, in his 82nd year.

Douglas, affectionately known as "The Bear," was the cherished husband of Bettyann Newman for 51 years.  Loving father of Derrick (Peggy), and Kelly Anne (Lynda).  Cherished grandfather of Tammy (Thomas), Shane (Kasey), D.J. (Rachel), Hunter (Jess), Kenneth, Heidi (Blake), Lorne, Austin (Megan), and the late Douglas (1987); and great-grandfather of Mason, Easton, Mary, Rose, Wyatt, Mya, Madison, and Brady.   He was also a much-loved uncle of Allan, Robert, Jennifer, Jodi, Nicole, Michelle, and Jaime Lynn; as well as to many great-nieces and great-nephews. Brother-in-law of Linda (Joe) and Helen (Jerry); and brother of the late Carolyn Murney.

Known for his love of the outdoors, Douglas found joy in hunting and fishing, reveling in the beauty of nature.  He had a passion for sports, with a particular fondness for baseball.  He especially enjoyed watching baseball games across the border in the United States.  He loved to travel, embarking on many adventures around the world with his wife.  He especially enjoyed seeing many destinations from the comfort of a cruise ship.

A private burial will be held at the Udney Cemetery in honor of Douglas.  Online memories and condolences may be shared at www.peacefultransition.ca.

Doug will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, but his legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories will live on forever in the hearts of those he touched.

So sorry to hear of Doug’s (“The Bear”) passing.
What fond memories of hunting with Doug, playing baseball in Brechin and attending baseball games in south western Ontario with Doug. The Brechin team now has their coach in heaven. May memories ease your pain at this most difficult time. Rest in peace “Bear”

Dear Bettyann, I was very sad to learn of Doug’s passing. Lots of memories from years gone by. Baseball games, dances, legion, etc. My father used to call him “the oldest boy”! He spent lots of time in the Shier household many years ago. We are losing a lot of “the good ones”. He will be missed but never forgotten. May he RIP 🙏

Bettyanne- It has been many years since I have seen you and Doug. You will remember that I had the privilege of serving Doug’s hearing needs for quite a few years. Doug was one of my very favorite people to work with. Those special relationships have been greatly missed since I retired.
I will always admire the two of you for your spirit of adventure. I heard about your trips, and Doug would always tell me where you were going next.
Cherish those special memories, and he will always be with you. Our condolences to you and your family.
    Sincerely,
    Reed and Helen Ellis
