Funeral Details: A private family Mass and Entombment will take place

Eugenio Genovese

With sadness and gratitude, we share the news that Eugenio Genovese aged 93 died peacefully on January 19, 2021.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Nino, Giuseppe, Santo, Salvatore and Benito, sister Maria, and beloved son, Carmen.  He is survived by his brother Vittorio and sister Elena (Sebastiano Bella), his children Joanne, Angie, Frank (Rachel Stirling), Marilyn (Patrick Brown), their mother, Pina; and Carmen’s widow Jo Bradley.  Nonno to Katarina, Eric, Charlotte, Francesca, Isabella, Giulia, Myla and Wes; Canadian Pa to Tobia and Ana, and cherished Cognato and Zio to many relatives at home and abroad.

Born in Santa Lucia del Mela, Eugenio grew up surrounded by family, friends and music as a talented accordionist and band leader.  He left Sicilia in July 1959 aboard the Queen Frederica to Halifax Pier 21 and on to Barrie, Ontario to the Giorgianni family, on his mother’s side.  Like many who arrived at that time, he found support and friendship among the growing local Italian community.  He partnered with his brother-in-law Nino Barbaro to open in 1966 the first Italian restaurant in Barrie - Pizzeria Italia on Mulcaster Street.  With the kids managing the business, he would drive his Cadillac to Florida every winter to be close with family, until he was no longer able to make the drive himself. Visits from his faraway relatives brought him great joy.

We are deeply grateful for the fantastic care and companionship he received from Christine Murray and the team at Simcoe Senior Services, truly the reason our father was able to remain in his home until, in recent months, his advancing illness forced our hand.  He was particularly fond of his regular caregiver Alba and loved entertaining her and visiting friends with stories from his youth in Sicily.  We would like to thank the staff at RVH’s Specialized Seniors Care Unit and at Amica Little Lake for providing compassionate care in Eugene’s final months, particularly during the stress of the pandemic.  Given current circumstances, there will be a private family mass and entombment, as well as a mass of remembrance given in Santa Lucia del Mela.

The family is grateful for donations in memory of Eugene to be made via CanadaHelps to community outreach programs at St Mary’s Church Barrie, to the Specialized Seniors/Dementia Care Unit at Royal Victoria Hospital, or to a charity of your choice.

Online memories and words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.peacefultransition.ca

L’eterno riposo dona a lui, o Signore, e splenda ad esso la Luce perpetua. Riposi in pace.  Amen

To the Genovese family please accept my condolences.
To my friend Eugenio I will truly miss you , I’ll miss the stories about Italy, about when you first came to Barrie, about the restaurant, about you being in the army and the rifle they gave you was taller than you therefore you were placed into the band. I always left your house with my side hurting as you always made me laugh.
All the stories about your family who I eventually met and I became friends with them. In the Barrie Police every body knew about Eugenio even if they had not met you. I spoke of you often.
My friend as I shed a tear for you, rest in peace. You spoke so much about your mother now your with her.
    Good bye my friend.

My dearest condolences to the family. My mother, daughter of Sam Giorgianni had a special spot for Eugene and Pina and the children. Eugene always made us feel like family in there home and restaurant. Eugene, with glasses on his forehead, was like an uncle to me. So many nice memories. To my extended cousin’s, may you find strength in his long life and his generosity. I will fondly remember Eugene, he will surely be with Sam in a place of peace.

Joanne, Marilyn,Angie and Frank, all our love from Sue and me and our children- Eugene was beloved by my mother Marie Tuzyk (Giorgianni), his cousin in Barrie, and I will always remember our visits to see your family first when on the top floor of the Pizzeria when you and we were just kids and then Nelson Street just down the street from us. We are so sorry given the circumstances we can’t see you at this time – you are very much in our thoughts and prayers.

Irene and I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Genovese family for their loss. Eugenio gave Barrie one of the best Italian restaurants that anyone could wish for. Many of my firirnds would go and have the famous house salad and pizza. They swore that there was none better. My mother during her last three years of her life had to have Eugenio’s ..Veal Marsala .. She claimed it was kust like home in Italy. The whole community will pray for him. May he rest in the Palm of God’s hand..Jim Perri

My deepest condolences to your family. I remember one time I had quit the waitress job. The only free time Eugene had was 2am to come and ask my parents to please send me back for the next shift as he was short handed. I caved and went back. Not something a boss could do these days. We had some great times, good laughs. Nice to see the little ones all grown up with children of their own. He truly was an icon in this town. Much love and prayers for the family. 🙏🌹

There are few words to express how much my dear neighbour, Eugenio, will be missed by me. Eugenio was my long-time neighbour and unexpected friend. I am honoured that he would usually greet me at his door with a cheery, “Christina, my friend.” He also loved visits from my dog, Rhino. He would eagerly feed carrots or little treats to Rhino, never taking his hand away from petting him. Under his tough exterior, Eugenio had a gentle heart.
Although we are 40 years apart in age, Eugenio was always willing to connect with me and share his joys and sorrows. His stories about Italy, his family, and his early life in Canada will remain with me always. He always focused on the humour in those stories; there was rarely a time I left one of our visits without having had a good laugh with him.
Eugenio would often ask, “Why?” He would ask why he couldn’t do certain tasks easily anymore, why he couldn’t keep track of names, why he couldn’t remember things from time to time. “Why?”
As Eugenio moves on from this earth, he leaves me with the question, “Why?”

My family’s deepest condolences. When my dad (Vito) came to Barrie in the 70’s he spent many hours at Pizzeria Italia. So much so he would get food made for him off the menu and even helped deliver pizzas for Eugene on his way home. Fantastic restaurant, Eugene’s legacy goes on.

Il Signore ti dia misericordia, pace e riposo eterno.
    Tuo cognato Franco Barbaro.

My deepest condolences to my Zia Pina and my cousins. I am so sad for the loss of my Zio. The first memory that I will forever hold in my heart was walking down the church aisle during my first communion. As I passed Zio Eugenio he leaned over to me and whisper “stuppaghiu” which was his term of endearment for me. Although he had a tough exterior he was a softy at heart. All it took was a poolside performance of the song “respect” and you could see his smile. He will be greatly missed. RIP Zio

I always remember when Eugene first arrived in Barrie..Msgr. Clair from St, Mary’s church called me at St. Monica’s and said he would like to bring Eugene to the school to play some music for us..We had no gym, so over 200 children and teachers lined the hallway with Eugene in the center and he began playing his accordion and for an hour, the students and staff were thrilled with his wonderful talent and music..It was his first concert performance in Canada…What a talented , beautiful life so many of us had the privilege of knowing him…May he fill Heaven with his music forever…Gerry Padfield

The Percy family is so saddened by this news. In 1998, we moved in to 12 Rodney across from Mr. and Mrs. Genovese. He was very kind to us, our kids and our dog Champ (who he would his leftovers to, the dog ate like a king!). Rest well Eugene, it’s been a long time.

Our deepest condolences to Mr. Genovese’s family. We were lucky to have Mr. Genovese as a neighbour for the last 23 years and were saddened to see him move away from the home he loved so much. We enjoyed our short visits, and his many stories when we met in front of our homes over the years. We will remember him as the first neighbour out in the snow to meticulously clear his driveway, and we will remember how our dog Champ would race across the street to the front of Mr. Genovese’s house where he would find small “treats” left out for him. He will be missed.

My sincere condolences to the Genovese family. Eugenio and Pina were very good to our family when we immigrated from Italy in 1967. Many times Eugenio would bring loaves of fresh baked bread to our home. The small number of Italian families in Barrie formed a tight-knit community and the Genoveses were kind to all.
