It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gabor Joseph Velekei, who passed away on September 28, 2026, at Hospice Simcoe in Barrie, Ontario.
Born on July 1, 1953, Gabor is survived by his son, Chris Velekei and his wife, Christina; his beloved granddaughters, Alexis and Zoey Velekei; and his brother, Las Velekei and brother-in-law Ron Whalen
Gabor enjoyed travelling and had the opportunity to experience many places throughout his life, with his trips to Africa holding a particularly special place among his memories.
He also had a great love for golf and could regularly be found on the course at Shanty Bay Golf Course. More than just the game itself, golf brought Gabor many wonderful friendships, good times, and countless laughs over the years.
Gabor’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his best friend, Ed Modrowski, for his friendship, support, and for always being there for Gabor. His presence and friendship were especially meaningful during the last few months of Gabor’s life, and the family is deeply grateful for the care and companionship he provided.
The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Hospice Simcoe for the kindness, compassion, dignity, and exceptional care they provided to Gabor during his time there. Their support and gentle care brought comfort not only to Gabor, but also to his family during a very difficult time.
In accordance with Gabor’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral or memorial service. Instead, we ask family and friends to take a moment to remember Gabor in their own special way — perhaps by sharing a favourite memory, raising a glass, or simply remembering one of the many laughs shared with him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Hospice Simcoe in Gabor’s memory.
Gabor will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
