It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Garry Archibald McKechnie, age 61, at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on December 23, 2024.
Born on January 23, 1963, in Toronto to Alexander Terry McKechnie and Janet McKechnie (nee Craig), Garry lived a full and vibrant life marked by love, dedication, and a deep connection to his family and heritage. He made Barrie his home for the past 30 years, where he built a legacy of leadership, kindness, and strength.
Garry is survived by his loving partner, Tina Baines; his children, Terry McKechnie (Rebekah Alemao) and Andrew McKechnie (Victoria Beaudry); stepchildren by heart, Sarah Sternberg (Ryan Sanford) and Sydney Sternberg (Cameron Moist); and cherished step-grandchildren by heart, Beckett Sanford and Grayson Sanford. He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander Terry McKechnie and Janet McKechnie (nee Craig), whose memories he honoured throughout his life.
Garry was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage, often sharing stories that celebrated his roots. His career spanned decades, beginning as an investment broker for 25 years before transitioning to work as a railing installer on some of the tallest buildings in the country. A skilled tradesman, Garry earned numerous certifications, including Working at Heights, Suspended Access Installer, and Swing Stage Operator.
Outside of work, Garry led an active life. In his younger years, he was a boxer, and he remained an avid gym enthusiast, always striving to stay fit to keep up with his sons. He found joy in watching the Toronto Maple Leafs, camping with Terry and Andrew, and spending peaceful days at his trailer with Tina. Though he often joked that he'd be thinking of the Leafs winning a Stanley Cup from beyond, his loyalty to the team never wavered.
Garry will be remembered for his passion for ball hockey—whether playing, coaching, or reffing—and his ability to connect with people through his humour and generosity. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back, a leader at work and at home, and a devoted family man who took pride in every role he held in life.
His family and friends will forever cherish the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the countless ways he showed up for those he cared about.
A celebration of Garry's life will be scheduled with details to follow.
We’ll think of Garry often, especially when the Leafs finally bring home the Cup. Rest in peace, Garry. You will be deeply missed.

Posted on: Sunday, December 29, 2024We have many found memories of Garry. We met about 30 years ago and formed a friendship while training together at various gyms around Barrie. Garry finished our basement and did several “handyman” projects in our home to which we are so grateful. He was always a joy to be around and we are very blessed to have known him.
Condolences to his beautiful family💜🙏🏿
Sincerely,
Dean, Christine, Deana and Jeremy Blondell

I know you’re proud of the “boys”.
You leave us a little ahead of schedule. Keep smiling. Save me a seat at the table. Rest well.
