Passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025 at the age of 87, at Matthews House Hospice, surrounded by love. Son of the late Clarence and Dorothy Griffith. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Lorraine (de. 2014), his cherished “Rain” as he called her (née Lawson). Loving father of Terri-Lynne (Paul), Brian (Tracey), Karen-Sue, Dawna-Lee, and Neil. Proud grandfather of Alex (Vanessa), Spencer (Olena), Vanessa, Timothy (Jenny), Samantha (Chris), Brett (Claudia), Taylor (Mitch), Olivia, Harrison, and Hillary; and cherished great-grandfather of Giacomo, Lorenzo, Massimo, Tommy, Michael, Jerry, Celine, Kayden, Liam, Carter, Luna, Lincoln, Brantley, and Carmen.
Dear brother of Dean (Jan), Anthony (Norma), Cheryl (Claire), Kerry (Bonnie), and Vera (Howard).
Garth was born in Parry Sound and raised his family in South River. After his many years of working, he first retired in Mississauga and then later to Barrie. Garth was known for his kind nature and willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. He was always there for his neighbours, friends, and family. He loved people, loved his family deeply, and was an active part of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives. Garth had a soft spot for dogs and was the go-to caretaker and dog whisperer for the family pets. A proud fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays, he enjoyed cheering them on each season.
Deeply rooted in the South River community, Garth dedicated many years of service as a volunteer Fire Chief. Though affectionately nicknamed “Grump,” those who knew him best knew he had a heart of gold.
A private Celebration of Life will be held.
Donations may be made to Matthews House Hospice in memory of Garth.

My brothers Rob, Ed and I were saddened upon hearing of Garth’s passing. Garth was such a kind and gentle man. In her latter years, our mother would call me after Garth paid her a visit on his rounds to assist the home bound. He took time to share fun stories with her and he was so very proud of each of his children. Garth was reliable. People knew they could always count on him. Garth made people feel safe. What a legacy for him to know his kids shared his values and high standards.

He always had so many facial expressions—sometimes hard to tell what he was thinking—but he was funny whether he meant to be or not. I’m really glad we got to see him this summer. He’s with Lorraine now, and that’s comforting to think about. He’ll definitely be remembered.
