OBITUARY Gordon Hayter

Gordon Frank Hayter died on 12 August, 2021 in Barrie, Ontario. He was born 10 February, 1936 in Vegreville, Alberta, the second of four sons of Ralph and Peggy Hayter. In the early 1950s, Gordon moved with his family to Barrie, and after graduating high school, he worked at the family restaurant on Bayfield Street. However, he missed Alberta, and he returned there to begin his lifelong career as a quarter-master for the Department of Highways in the Peace River area, a job he enjoyed immensely. It was there that he met his companion, Thelma, with whom he enjoyed many happy years. After Thelma’s passing, Gordon returned to Barrie to be closer to his family.

Gordon loved travelling and visited Germany, Belgium, and England. He was very sociable and enjoyed meeting new people wherever he happened to be. Many happy summers were spent at his brother John’s Muskoka cottage, in “his own” room in the boathouse. He was a collector of many disparate things, and he loved driving big flashy cars, particularly convertibles. He was an optimist and an all-round cheerful man.

Gordon was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church, Barrie, where he worked as Proctor until ill-health forced him to retire. Gordon lived until the ripe age of 86, quite an achievement for someone who was not expected to live beyond age 15 because of a heart condition.

Gordon leaves behind many friends and family, including his two brothers, John (Fran) and Mick (Liz), and many nephews and nieces. He was pre-deceased by his youngest brother Alon (Peggy). He is remembered fondly by his god-daughter, Sandy Bishop, daughter of Gordon’s lifelong friend, Roy Bishop.

Gordon’s inurnment will take place on Sunday, August 29th 2021 at St. George’s Millennium Memorial Garden following his sister-in-law Fran’s inurnment which will begin at 1pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George’s Church, Barrie.

I was so very sorry to hear that my good friend, Gordon, had passed away. I will always remember what a good, true, and faithful friend he was, to everyone. He was a true Christian, and lived his life, accordingly. We had many meals, together, and he would always offer Grace. He always ended with, “…..be with us, and the children of the world, in peace, and prosperity.” May you rest in Peace, my friend………
