It is with sadness that we share that Guenter passed away peacefully at home in Barrie on September 5, 2025 at the age of 82.

Guenter leaves behind his loving wife of 59 years Judy, who was the light of his life.  He was a devoted father to Mark and Michael (Lisa), and grandfather to Jonah, Ethan, Maxwell and Myles.  He is also survived by his sister Doris Kaitlin.

Guenter was born in Germany in 1943 and moved to Galt Ontario with his family in 1952.  He adapted quickly to a new life in Canada, and it swiftly became apparent that he would excel academically.  He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1966 and then continued his studies in England for two years after being awarded the prestigious Athlone Fellowship.  Upon his return to Canada, he worked several years for Atomic Energy of Canada while also completing his MBA.  Subsequently, he worked the rest of his career in the field of core drilling and oversaw the engineering of multiple diamond drilling rigs.  He passionately loved his job; the challenges it provided him, the places he travelled and for the many colleagues he enjoyed working with. He was proficient at solving problems and was awarded multiple patents during his career.

He had many passions including classical music, opera, reading the Economist and Sunday NY Times, both reading and collecting books, going for long walks with his dog, machines of any type, and eating his wife’s cooking.  He was so proud of his sons and grandsons and treasured every family occasion. Above all else, he adored spending time with his wife Judy.  They shared a full life together of friendship, respect, travel and love.

He will be remembered as an intelligent, patient and caring man.  Guenter will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Guenter’s Life will be held at the Parkview Centre, 189 Blake Street, Barrie on Saturday October 11th from 1-4pm with memories being shared at 3pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross in Guenter’s memory.

Bob and I have good memories of trips to Egypt and South Africa with Guenter and Judy. Guenter had a great sense of humour and it was a fun travel companion.
Sending condolences to Judy and family.
