Hedwig “Hedy” Gumpesberger

1931-10-17 - 2016-02-28

Funeral Details:

GUMPESBERGER, Hedwig “Hedy” Maria   (nee Deuerer)

Oct. 17, 1931 – Feb. 28, 2016 in her 85th year

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Hedy Gumpesberger at the Trillium Manor in Orillia Ontario following a six year struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Hedy was predeceased by her parents, husband Maximillian, twin sister Trudy and brother Peter.

Survived by her children Linda (Dani) Beneshai, of Toronto, Peter Gumpesberger of London England, and Sylvia Gumpesberger of Toronto and grandchildren Max, Noa & Ariel.  Also survived by her common-law partner Larry Whitehead of Oro Medonte.

Born in Switzerland, Hedy grew up in her family restaurant business in Germany and at age 21 she relocated to her now beloved Canada. Where she found herself alone in Halifax and short funds for the train pass to join her sister. There a stranger came forward and gave her the small amount of money she needed.  Hedy never forgot that kindness and it inspired her to pay it forward.

A friend to young and old, much beloved and known by all as intelligent, generous spirited and fun loving.   Hedy established herself as a successful entrepreneurial woman all the while improving her education learning English and at age 50 obtaining her B.A. from the University of Toronto,  leading to her passion as a teacher.  A lifelong learner with a zeal for life she found joy in nature, gardening, music, dancing, socializing and a good book.

Her family and friends will miss her loving energy, compassion and kindness. In lieu of flowers Hedy would want you to regularly perform random acts of kindness for anyone who needs a helping hand.

We would like to Thank the staff of the Alzheimer’s unit at Trillium Manor, Orillia for their support and compassion.

Arrangements were entrusted to Peaceful Transition, Barrie ON. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation.  A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date.
