James Syer Ballantyne

October 5, 1990 - January 4, 2021

Funeral Details: A Private Family Gathering Was Held

James Syer Ballantyne passed away peacefully with his parents by his side at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket on January 4th, 2021 at the age of 30.

James was born on October 5, 1990 and ever since that day, he captured the heart and love of everyone who knew him. James will be dearly missed by his parents Wayne Ballantyne (Elgein) and Mary Anne Van Acker (Randy), his sister Lauren (Amanda) and brother Sean. He will also be deeply missed by his grandparents Maurice and Leona, who were so proud of him. He will be missed by so many others; his uncles and aunts Pat, Rene, John, Jayne, Susie, and Cheryl, plus all his cousins and friends from around the world. And lastly, his dearest pawed friend, Milo.

James cared deeply for his family and for his friends. He loved family events and rarely missed any. He loved spending time with and greatly valued his friends. He loved to travel and spent a semester at the Tilburg University in Holland. He made the most of this time in Europe, travelling extensively and making many new friends along the way. After James’ undergrad in International Business at Ottawa University, he was hired by State Farm and proceeded with promotions through his career toward his most recent position as an Advisor within Desjardins’ Commercial Actuarial division. He was a very smart and ambitious young man with a life-long desire to learn. He could frequently be found reading books, newspapers, and magazines, listening to podcasts, or watching documentaries. He was also an avid explorer of Toronto’s food scene. With his wide array of knowledge, he could engage in meaningful conversation with anyone, and he loved to make others laugh. He was the kindest soul who took time to stop and talk to strangers, letting them feel he was their friend for that moment. He is a loss to so many.

James, we love you so very much. We are so proud of you. You will be so truly missed and you will never be forgotten. You are in our hearts and memories, forever.

A private family gathering has taken place.  Arrangements entrusted to Peaceful Transition York (2-15236 Yonge Street Aurora, Ontario) and condolences may be forwarded to the family through peacefultransition.ca

In Memory of James, memorial donations may be made directly through Camh.ca

James never ended a convo until you were crying of laughter. I spoke with him on Saturday afternoon, he joked around for half of our convo; still left me laughing. He was excited about Milo having a yard to play in. I hope you know how loved you were. Love and miss you dearly. ❤️

James has been a great colleague, brother and friend.

We both started in the same group at State Farm and on the first day we both sat together immediately making friends and joking around.

We both shared similar interests in music and passion for various world renouned dj’s.

Always contacted his work friends to chat and catch up during busy times.

James, you will be missed. I don’t know anyone else who mistakenly buys concert tickets only to find out that the band we came to see turned out to be the opener band, but you did. I will miss dragging you all over Toronto eating at the most overpriced hipster brunch spots. Thanks for putting up with me and educating me on the most random facts. At least now you can go bother Alex Trebek.

James was the life of all social gatherings. He made sure that everyone was included and engaged with everyone, even the people that he just met. I had many firsts with James. He took me to my first NFL game, my first rock concert, my first tailgate party and the list can keep going. I will always cherish those memories. James made everyone around him smile and feel special. He will be greatly missed. ❤

James, my dear friend, my oldest friend, you will be missed more than I can express with words. Over the past few days I’ve been reminiscing on all of our amazing moments, experiences and memories that we shared. From concerts, Wake Stock, Festivals, Euro trips, Halo shreds, tossing the lax ball around, prom, Bills games and all the blurry nights that we got into as stupid yutes. There are too many to write out. So, I am going to get to the point, you were a great friend, a best friend, a confidant, a leader, a kind, generous and selfless person. I am going to miss you dude, I carry your influence with me every day. Gone far too soon, but never forgotten.

I love you dude… your friend, always, Jimmy <3

Jimmy V! So full of life, humour and a joie de vivre that would rival anyone. Always smiling, a bastion of positivity.

I am going to dearly miss our sporadic and frequent chats about politics, history, sports, work and all of the other random topics we discussed over the years. I can still picture you coming down the row to chat with Stuart and I about anything and everything.

You will be sincerely missed Mr. Valentine. I hope one day that our paths will cross again and we’ll be able to exchange some finger guns 😉

I worked with James for about a year and half on the same team and kept in touch with him when he moved into a new role, although, I regret to say, not as much as I should have. He would always come around to have a chat and cheer me up when I wasn’t having the best day and even took me out for Shawarma after I had not done well on an important exam. He was a dog-lover like me and he’d often send me funny videos or ask to see photos of my dog and I his. He was such a kind person with an unforgettable laugh that I will never forget.

    My deepest condolences.

The tributes to a young man with so much ahead of him keep coming, testimony to the charm and kindness of James Ballantyne. But as we come together today to honour this young man, he is, tragically, not among us. In his 30 years of life, James made many friends who today are united in grief. I will always remember you for your intelligence, your sharp wit and your great sense of humour. You were truly a one of a kind person, who always checked up on friends and provided support and a laugh when needed the most. I’ll forever cherish the countless memories I have of all the good times we’ve had together and will miss you dearly my friend. I know that I will see you again someday buddy – Until then, Rest in Paradise Jimmy, love you bro!

James- it feels surreal writing this. It was only a couple of weeks ago we were discussing you making a trip in 2021 to Buffalo for a Bills game. You will be missed dearly. I cherish all of the great memories we had together. The trips to London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Toronto, Buffalo all are some of my fondest memories. We have spent the last couple of days revisiting those times, and truly have made me grateful for knowing such a special individual. To Mary Anne and Wayne- your son brought so much happiness to me and so many others. He was a shining light in this world. We loved him so much. He will be missed dearly.

James and I had walked home together almost everyday throughout high school. Although we only saw each other on occasion since- I always have and always will look back on those days with the fondest memories, with you and the rest of the gang.

Thank you to your family for a wonderful online service.

Dear Wayne, Mary Anne, Lauren, Sean and Family,

We are so saddened to hear of James’ passing. It is incomprehensible.

James was, and always will be a part of our village, our neighbourhood, and our family. We have all been so blessed to have our kids make and maintain the wonderful friendships that have grown out of the neighbourhood that they grew up in.
He was one of the boys: and we considered him one of our own.

From the early days at Wells Street School, where many families bonded and lifetime friendships were made among our children, though to adulthood, James was one of the gang. There was always the brief moment of confusion when any news about a “James” was being relayed, because there were so many “James” in the gang, “I’m sorry, are we talking about Jimmy, Ballantyne or Floros? We always had to clarify.

Our earliest memories of James are helping him learn to ski, during several of the Wells Street Ski days. He was always a very determined and capable kid. Then watching him grow and mature, until the day he walked in our door, after not seeing him for a while, and being stunned by the young man standing there before us. He had found a love of working out and was tall, lean and muscular. He smiled from ear to ear because he knew he looked great!

The thing we loved best about James was that even though we were just the parents of one of his friends, he always took a minute to stop and have a chat with us. He was polite, engaging, funny and always made us feel like family.

We loved James, and we mourn his loss with you.

I have so many great memories of James at the cottage: tube wars and the Jumping Rocks; ska and new wave music (thanks Wayne!); Harry Potter and the Simpsons; and later, as we got older flip cup and many Happy Hours on the dock. The Ballantynes are more than just seasonal home neighbours to the Sparks and Holzmans; they’re family. And so many of my childhood family memories will forever have James in them. Lots of love- Sara Holzman, Iqaluit, Nunavut

James and I were second cousins. An ocean between us. But in spite of the distance, I felt like he was my friend and I am so sorry for his loss.

The first time we met was In 2003. We met at Waynes cottage by the Lake of Bays. Me, my meme and Justine had a nice afternoon at the lake. James was then 12 and I was 14. He was funny and friendly and maybe a bit shy.

The second time we saw each other was in 2011. James was studying abroad in the Netherlands. During the Easter Holiday, Mary Anne, Lauren and James stayed at my parents’ house. We visited Bruges and Brussels together and had a nice couple of days. James was good at making conversation and such a nice guy to be around.

The last time we saw each other was in 2015. I was on a solo trip to Canada. James and I spent a few days together in Toronto and Aurora. We went on walks with Reggy, he took me to The Royal Ontario Museum and we had a couple of nice meals together at places he showed me. I remember we got a parking ticket and ate at a Jamaican place. He also took me to my first and only baseball game. The bluejays won that night. James was a generous person and made sure I had a good time.

I’m sorry we never got to see each other again after that. If we had lived in the same country, I think we would have been close friends. I will never forget him.

    Mary Anne, Wayne and families,

We are so very sad about this. James was a smart, funny, sweet guy. He made the world a better place by being in it, and we hope you can take some comfort from that. We have some great memories and will always cherish those. We will make a donation to honour his memory. Take good care. Jane, Mike and Hayley.

I know I speak for all of James’ childhood friends when I say that losing James feels like losing a brother.

I grew up with James and counted him as a close friend for 25 years. We knew each other from such a young age that I can barely remember a time without him.

In elementary school at Wells Street PS, a few of our teachers thought it was hilarious to seat James and I beside each other in class and shout “James!”, so we would jerk our heads around in response at the same time. I remember we got into trouble a couple of times for reading James’ contraband Spy vs. Spy comics instead of practicing our cursive writing and multiplication tables.

There are so many things I will miss about him, from his eclectic music taste (punk to techno, the Aquabats to Wu-Tang), our hard-fought Jeopardy battles, his always solid intel of the best places to eat in the GTA, dropping Seinfeld quotes, going to concerts together, cottage weekends, and reminiscing about some of our questionable hairstyle and fashion choices over the years. James never gave a bad book recommendation; I think he was single-handedly responsible for about 50% of the circulation of the Aurora Public Library with the volume of books he borrowed. I’m especially fond of our memories of being young and carefree, spending countless hours hanging out in our parents’ basements along with those epic walks home from Aurora Grove and Williams. It’s funny how all those collective hours of ‘doing nothing’ with the guys are what you come to appreciate the most.

As we mourn, it has been heartening to see how many people knew James and the many lives he touched. It is so important to remember the friends who have always been there for us and helped us become who we are. Like James’ family and friends, I’ve felt tremendous pain and grief at his passing. But I also feel a deep sense of gratitude for having known James and gratitude for our years of friendship from childhood to adulthood.

As we used to say after hanging out: I’ll see you when I see you.

    James Floros

After knowing James as a baby and as a young child I had the good fortune to catch up with him a couple years back at a concert. What a young man he had become–smart, warm, kind and completely engaging. We hadn’t seen each other in a long while but he jumped right into conversation with me like no time had passed. James was always a truly delightful kid and that night James the young man impressed me so much–his wide-ranging intellect combined with the rare ability to quickly & genuinely connect with others. News of his loss is devastating. The world is poorer without James in it. Sincere condolences to his mum and dad, his stepmum & stepdad, his sister and brother, his entire extended family and his friends. I’m grateful to have had that brief evening’s opportunity to see what a wonderful adult James had become.
