I am saddened to hear of Mr. McCall’s passing. He was my teacher in both grades 6 and 8 at Allandale Heights PS. I have always considered him to be one of the best and most fair educators I had in all my school years.
My most sincere condolences to his family.
A lovely man. Wish I had taken the time to get to know him a bit better. R.I.P. John McCall. You gave my beloved granddaughter (Beccy McCall) the gift of unconditional love and for that I will always be grateful. Know that your remarkable son (Jeff), his wife (Beccy) and your Kitchener grandchildren (Abigail and Tatum) will carry you in their hearts for generations to come.
Oh John.
Thank you for supporting me from day one. Thank you for always treating me like more than a daughter in law. Thank you for all the laughs and memories.
I’ll take care of Jeff and the girls for you, and will forever love and support your beloved Carol. I’ll miss you always.

Oh, Grandpa John.
I can’t even come up with the words to describe the kind of person you were.
You were the come as you are person, you always knew how to make everyone laugh, and always had stories to tell.
You’ll forever be remembered through wine, the news channel, dad vacation shirts and dad jokes.
Love you more then you’ll ever know, and miss you immensely from beautiful downtown kitchener.
I was saddened to learn of Mr. McCall’s passing. Even as a child at Portage View PS, I admired him greatly as both a teacher and a vice principal. I was privileged to have not only known him but to have been taught by him. RIP sir! Deepest condolences to his family and I hope your many memories of him hold you through this hard time.
I first met John at Goodfellow Public School in 1994, where he was my vice-principal. After a few years I applied for a position at Sunnybrae, and I asked John for a reference letter. He said no problem, and a day or two later he handed it to me, and asked me to look it over to see if it was ok. I started reading it, and all of a sudden I gasped, then laughed, as his sense of humour shone through. The letter contained all sorts of examples of how I mistreated students, staff and so on. He then handed me the real letter of reference, and in true John sense was full of kind and supportive words. 31 years later I still have those 2 letters. We became friends, often meeting weekly with John, Carol and other friends for wings, beer and laughs. Once 2020 arrived things changed for everyone, but we would still see him on occasion at RVH where he volunteered for many years. We send our heartfelt condolences to Carol and John’s family. Rest peacefully John and say hi to Bear for us- I’m sure he has some stories for you.
I’m saddened to hear of Mr. McCall’s passing. He was my grade 8 teacher and Principal at PVPS and I appreciated his firm yet compassionate and effective teaching and leading style.
I had the privilege of reconnecting with Mr. McCall years later during my career at RVH where he was a dedicated Volunteer, and now insisted I call him ‘John’. He surprised me one day appearing at my office door with a poster sized picture he’d removed from the Portage View PS storage. It was a group photo of public speaking contest winners, with him perched proudly in the middle and me, as a very small grade 2 student, standing amongst the group. He wanted me to have the picture, which is just one example of many of his kindness and thoughtfulness. I will miss you John.
John, you always made my kids (your grandkids) laugh and us too. You were warm, kind, genuine, and always had a joke to share. I remember our weekly visits on the cottage dock when Emerson was a baby, you bouncing in the front door when I was in labour with our 2nd baby, playing cars with the kids and spending time with them fishing. You will be remembered for your love of sunshine, patios, pools, pool shirts, volunteering at the hospital, news, good food, and red wine. I hope you found my dad in heaven, and the two of you can get to know each other and watch over us. Until we meet again, you’re in our hearts forever. Xo,
Erika
I had the privilege of knowing John through the RVH Auxiliary and his volunteer work. He was a kind, gentle person with a great sense of humor. We are all feeling the loss and I personally want to send my condolences to the family. He has touched many lives and will be remembered.
By the people I talk to as former pupils John was a well loved and respected teacher. Ad always fellow volunteer at RVH he was a great ambassador for RVH. Always willing to help out at the parking machine. My prayers to the family
I first met John at Goodfellow school in 1991-2. I was new to the school and very much appreciated John’s low key approach as Vice-Principal and his sense of humour. He was always there to help in a positive way. Later we became friends with he and Carol and enjoyed some social times together. John will be missed by all who knew him. Our condolences Carol and to all the family.
Mr.McCall was my grade 6 and 8 teacher at Shanty Bay P.S. His lessons and wisdom shared then still get used by me today.
From learning how to prepare tax returns to suggestions on when to renew mortgages!
My sincere condolences to his family.
