It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John William Bate at the age of 91 at Royal Victoria Hospital on September 21, 2026. He was predeceased by his parents; Milton Bate and Veronica Pearl (nee Gray).
John was a devoted and caring husband for nearly sixty-four years to his beloved wife, Gwynneth. He was a loving father to Paul (Jocelyn) and Pamela (Bruce) and an adored grandfather to Ryan, Matthew, Kayla, Liam, Drew and Jasmine.
John was a kind, caring and compassionate man with a wonderful sense of humour that was so quick at times it was easy to miss. He had a special gift for bringing laughter to those around him and when in his presence you felt welcomed and heard. His warmth, generosity, and genuine concern for others touched the lives of many. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, and his empathy for those in need reflected the goodness of his heart.
John dedicated over three decades of his working life to Stewart Wholesale in Barrie, where he worked as an accountant and business manager. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed friendships that were formed there and lasted his lifetime. He later spent fifteen years working in real estate in the Barrie area. His honesty and integrity were appreciated by all who were fortunate to have worked with him.
John enjoyed travelling extensively with Gwynneth throughout North America, the Caribbean and Europe. Many of those trips included friends, as John and Gwynneth had together over the years established a significant social circle and a network of very close friends. Prior to his health diminishing, John loved playing billiards weekly with his dear buddies Mike, Donny & Barry and many other close friends. Going away for long weekends, golfing, euchre, BBQ’s, day trips, country drives, a warm fire while watching a movie and Danny’s fish and chips were all things loved by John.
Dad’s greatest joy was his family. He treasured the life he had built with Gwynneth, whom he would have given the world if it was his to give. Dad met mom in 1961 when he was operating his own private Driving School in Midland Ontario and she had signed up for driving lessons. They were married the following year. Dad never stopped doting on our mother and did everything he could to support her and love her until his last admission into the hospital. His love, respect and admiration for her was unwavering and something that was admired by those who knew them as a couple.
Dad adored his children, Paul and Pamela. There wasn’t anything he would not have done for them. He was always present and his love for them had no boundaries. Dad’s six grandchildren were an endless source of happiness. He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren who loved him immensely. John valued family gatherings and hearing about the accomplishments of his grandchildren. When he had the audience of his grandchildren, he loved telling stories, making them laugh and he never missed an opportunity to utilize a teachable moment or impart a life lesson. When they were together with him, they felt his caring nature and knew they were being heard as he was a great listener. Those moments and the bonds he formed brought him great joy and will forever remain precious to his grandchildren.
Dad will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity, his wonderful sense of humour, his integrity and his willingness to help others. Above all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, a grandfather who was deeply loved by his family, and a loyal friend.
Cremation has taken place as per John’s wishes and a small, family internment was held on Saturday October 10, 2026.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Salma Adam whose caring nature, open dialogue and holistic approach helped dad come to terms with his end of life.
Rest peacefully Dad. Thank you for the love, laughter and countless memories. You will always be in our hearts.
