Klaas Cornelis VanderVeen

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Klaas Cornelis VanderVeen, who died peacefully on September 7, 2026, at the age of 94.

Klaas was born on May 2, 1932, in Franeker, Nederland, the eldest son of Cornelis Klaas VanderVeen and Albertje Kobes.  His Friesian/Dutch roots and his family remained an important part of who he was throughout his long life.

Klaas will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 71 years, Nanny Leopoldine Brouwer (Nan, Nancy), and by his daughter Lani Melinda.  He is also survived by his siblings Christiaan (Ann), Rinske (Hans), and Rinke (Sonya), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Klaas and Nan built a life together filled with family, friendship, adventure and travel.  His long career with Air Canada opened the world to them, providing many opportunities to travel and experience different places and cultures.  For Klaas, these journeys were not simply about seeing the world—they were about the memories made along the way and the experiences shared with the people he loved.

Following his retirement, Klaas happily pursued one of his great passions: art.  He loved paintings and enjoyed travelling throughout Europe and North America, buying and selling works that appealed to him. He took great pleasure in the search itself, and art remained an important and enjoyable part of his life.

He also loved golf.  In the winter, he enjoyed playing with friends in Texas, while summers in Ontario brought opportunities to play with family and friends.  The camaraderie, conversation and time together were as important to him as the game itself.

Klaas had a wonderful curiosity about the world and an appreciation for the things that made life interesting.  He enjoyed good company, had a wonderful sense of humour, and valued the friendships and family relationships that enriched his life. He leaves behind not only memories of places visited and things collected, but also the many stories, laughs and moments shared with those around him.

Klaas was preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings Rinke (1942), Jacob (2002), Tjitse (Jim) (2016), Andries (Andy) (2024), and Jeltje (Jill) (2022), as well as his brothers’ wives, Iemkje (2020) and Alida (Alice) (2018).  He was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Karen Abegail, in 1970.

Klaas leaves behind a family who loved him, friends who valued his companionship, and a lifetime of memories that will continue to be shared and cherished.

He will be remembered with love, gratitude and a smile—and will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Klaas’s life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at Tollendale Village - Eden Hall, 282 Hurst Dr., Barrie from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
