It is with great love and sadness that the family of Margaret Jean Sarjeant (nee Hodges) announces her peaceful passing on July 20, 2023 at the age of 96.

Marg was born in East Caledon, Ontario to Harry and Marjorie Hodges, and moved to Barrie as a young girl where she lived for most of her life. In 1952 she married her Barrie sweetheart, Douglas Albert Sarjeant (d. 2014), and they lived happily together for 62 years. Marg had an older brother, Bert Hodges and a younger sister, Francis Van de Kamer, both of which predeceased her. Margaret will be dearly missed by her three children, Scott Sarjeant, Reid Sarjeant and Lori Teekasingh (Tony), as well as by her grandchildren Sean (Amanda) and Archie Sarjeant, Stuart, and Matthew Teekasingh.  She is also survived by two great granddaughters, Zoe, and Nora Sarjeant.

Marg attended Barrie District Central Collegiate and played clarinet in the marching band. After graduation she worked as an office worker for the Barrie Registry prior to marrying Douglas. Once married Marg lovingly focused on being an amazing homemaker, wife, and mother. She also volunteered unselfishly at the May Court Club of Barrie for 29 years, as well as at the Simcoe County Children’s Aid Society.

Marg’s father, Harry Hodges was a World War I veteran who joined the 48th Highlanders at the start of WWI at the age of only seventeen. She took great pride in the fact that her father served valiantly in Europe on the front lines of battles such as Ypres until the war ended in 1918, as well as for an additional year afterwards as part of the peace force in Germany.

Marg enjoyed skiing, golfing, and curling with her friends, as well as sewing, knitting beautiful sweaters, and cooking sumptuous meals. Her kindness and warm smile will always be in our hearts.

The Sarjeant family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Tomas Pauk of Barrie and Dr. Michael Aubrey of Newmarket who were Marg’s long-time family doctor and medical specialist that helped her live a long, wonderful life. Margaret will miss her loving and caring calls from her niece, Anne Hodges of Sudbury. Thanks also to Una McWatt who provided home care for Marg in her final years.

A very warm thanks to Hospice Simcoe for welcoming Margaret into their care and dignified place for her end of life

A Celebration of Marg’s Life will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2023, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at her Barrie residence.

Anyone who wishes to honour her memory is asked to please donate to the Salvation Army at www.salvationarmy.com

A lot of fun, Aunt Marg’s smile lit up the room – she was a treasure! The Marks have fond memories of family reunions and Jack and my visit with her last summer.
    With loving condolences,
