Marretje “Mary” Hekkenberg

Funeral Details: Private family arrangements

The family of Mary Hekkenberg sadly announce her passing on July 20, 2022 at 87 years of age in Barrie.  Predeceased by her beloved husband Hank (2002).  Cherished mother of Ingrid, Jacky (David) and Rob (Donna).  She will be fondly remembered by her 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.  Mary was born in Huizen, the Netherlands and emigrated to Canada settling in Mississauga where she married in 1958.  Mary, with her husband Hank, had a busy and fulfilling life.  Mary worked as a lab technician for a number of years and eventually went back to college to become an early Childhood Educator.  Mary and Hank loved spending time at their cottage and travelled extensively.  In 2000 they moved to Tollendale Village where Mary developed an extensive network of friends.  Mary also found time to volunteer at her church, Collier Street United Church, at Grove Park Home and with Hospice Simcoe.  Mary was a person of strong character, fiercely self reliant and yet generous toward her family and others with her time and support of many charities.  Mary's Dutch roots always anchored her personality, combining in a complementary way with the pride she took in her Canadian identity.  There will be a private family service at Collier Street United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to Collier Street United Church or Hospice Simcoe would be appreciated by the family.  Online memories and condolences may be made at www.peacefultransition.ca
