Martin Eric Carl

October 9, 1959 - May 14, 2020

Funeral Details: June 11, 2022 - See Link Below for Details

It is with profound sadness that we announce that Martin Carl, beloved husband, father, son, best friend, coach, teacher, and ultimate sports fan passed away suddenly in his sleep on Thursday, May 14th at his home.  Martin’s parents, June and Erik Carl, emigrated to Canada in 1956 with Martin’s two older brothers Niels (1951) and Jens (1954).  In 1959, Martin was born in Toronto.  He attended Thorncliffe Park Public School until the beginning of grade four.  His parents bought their first home on Manor Road and Martin attended Maurice Cody Junior Public School. Martin graduated from Northern Secondary School where he played football and was also the Student Council President.  After graduation he moved to Thunder Bay where he attended Lakehead University.  Upon completing his degree in Business Administration he returned to Toronto and worked in a professional business setting for one summer.  That was enough to convince Martin that the world of business was not for him, so he returned to Lakehead University to obtain a Bachelor of Education degree. Thank goodness - for so many reasons - that he decided to become a teacher and coach! It was during these years of going to University and working at The Keg that he met his beloved wife Eileen.  They worked at the Keg throughout university and made many lifelong friends!  Together they finished their education degrees and moved to Barrie in 1984 to look for teaching jobs.  They did not know one person in the Barrie area when they arrived.  After supply teaching for a year, Martin was hired by the SCDSB to teach at Robert Thompson Youth Centre near Cookstown.  He taught at Alliston Union for several years, along with his wife Eileen.  After several years in the elementary panel Martin switched to the secondary panel where he taught for one year in Orillia at ODCVI.  In 1990 he began his long tenure at Eastview Secondary where he taught Business, Life Skills, Careers, Guidance, and Special Education.  He coached Football, Girls Hockey and Girls Slo-Pitch for 29 years.  In addition to coaching at the school level, Martin was involved at the county and provincial level where he advocated passionately to promote athletics. He was the driving force behind countywide tournaments that promoted school spirit and fun but also raised funds for charity.  His two daughters Mackenzie and Whitney were fortunate enough to be coached by their Dad throughout their entire lives including their high school years.  He also fundraised at the Barrie Bingo Hall for over twenty five years.  These proceeds supported Eastview Athletics.  Martin retired in June of 2019 officially but continued to work for the school board until December of 2019 as their Athletic Coordinator. Martin’s father Erik Carl passed away on April 30th, of this year. Martin generously and selflessly looked after and supported his dad until Erik’s passing. His dad lived to be almost 95 years old.  Martin is survived by his wife Eileen, daughters Mackenzie (Jake), granddaughter Pearl, Whitney (Evan), brothers Niels, and Jens, nieces and nephews Angela (Don), great nephew Dillon, Emily, Christian (Curniss), Jessica, and Eric.  Martin was a dedicated husband and father first and foremost.  He treasured his beloved wife, Eileen, with whom he shared 40 happy years.  Together they shared many hobbies: sports, travel, culture, music and the arts.  They created a beautiful and loving family with daughters Mackenzie and Whitney.  Martin embraced every moment with them.  He was delighted when Mackenzie and her public school sweetheart Jake were married.  He was equally thrilled when Whitney’s fiancé Evan proposed on a beach during a family vacation to Denmark.  He especially loved his role as Papa to his granddaughter Pearl, who was born in 2019.  Arriving in Barrie as newcomers with no connections in 1984, Martin and Eileen built an enormous network of friends and colleagues.  Humour, affection and love were the foundation of the family they built, and these values became part of the countless rich relationships Martin cultivated over the years.  He was a Leafs/Argos/Bills/Jays and Raptors superfan who shared his passion for sports with his family and his incredibly wide circle of friends.  Martin also enjoyed playing many sports such as hockey, slo-pitch, and golf from a very young age.  He was involved in many leagues, serving as a convenor and a commissioner as well as a player, participating with his many friends as well as his two sons-in-law.  Many thanks to the SCDSB and the senior administration team for their support and acknowledgement of Martin’s work as a sports advocate, mentor, coach, and educator.  He was truly grateful for their support and friendship. In lieu of flowers, or charitable donations, Martin would have been honoured if instead you would go forward and do something to contribute to your community.  Help someone in need, coach a team, volunteer, notice someone, and reach out.  Martin’s outstanding contribution to others is his legacy.  He lived his life with gratitude, selflessness and an appreciation for his rich relationships.  You have enriched our lives and we are eternally grateful - God Bless you, Dad/Martin for having you in our lives for as long as we did.  Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.peacefultransition.ca

I am still shaking my head.
It is hard to believe Martin is not going to be there at the football field, the Kempenfelt Cup, and at the completion of the long awaited artificial turf field at the new high school.
One of the proudest moments in my career was just last year when I was honoured to present to my friend, Martin, the Kelly Breedon Elliott Award for his selfless contributions to our schools and students, organizing and leading for his whole career.
The photograph attached is that of Martin, Eileen, Whitney and Mackenzie at the GBSSA Annual Meeting last year. It was fantastic to see the love and the bond the family has, and the pride they all had in Martin’s accomplishments and the recognition.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Eileen and family. Martin was a good man and a great friend. He is missed

Martin was a mentor, role model and friend. We were on field rivals, but it was healthy and inspiring. As a younger teacher and coach I am so fortunate to have had colleagues in the Simcoe County community that have helped and shaped me to be a better teacher and coach. Martin was right at the top of the list. Martin was special. He was funny, forward thinking, a family man, and passionate. I am so thankful to have known him. He will be dearly missed. My heart go out to the Eastview community, and his friends and family.

Our work shift flew by with his constant brilliance and humor. I always knew he would continue to touch lives wherever he went. Love seeing pictures his beautiful girls and of course Eileen, stunning as ever. So sorry for your loss and the world can’t be the same without him in it.

    Eileen, Mackenzie, and Whitney,
Spending most of my career within earshot of your dad provided me with so much laughter, ribbing, friendship, bickering, but most of all caring support. What I learned over the years is that Martin was passionately in love with his family, and you all felt the exact same way. I’m so very sorry for your inconceivable loss. I will miss your dad always, and cherish the impact he has made in my life. Martin made me laugh, and brought levity during some of the most challenging times in our career. At the end of the day, no matter what, he knew he had his best friend, and two amazing young daughters to come home to. He taught me that having a loving supportive family behind you, meant you could give of your time and energy to help others. He did that over and over again.
Martin, I want to keep talking as usual, cause I’m not quite sure how to say good bye. Love you. Rest In Peace but also stir up the pot where you are, I’m sure you have some great ideas already!

A perfect Gentleman with a great sense of hunour and of course unsellfish community commitment.

For so many years of rain, hail and snow on the football field then moving inside to the warmth of the hockey rink, I always enjoyed the competition and sportsmanship that Martin brought to the games that he hosted and the championships he convened. Win or lose he was an advocate for kids and sports and his impact will be endless.

It was with great sadness and shock that I heard of Martin’s passing. Although not a close friend, I was extremely fortunate to have spent plenty of time with Eileen and him (and many kooky, fun-loving others), back in the Thunder Bay days and when I first moved to Toronto many moons ago. I was able to connect with Martin on a few occasions later in life, as he remained true to himself, his family, friends and life. After reading the loving tributes to him, an affectionate fondness returned, along with his spirit and love of life.
As I said to one of his close Barrie friends and fellow retiree, he has left an indelible mark on not only his loving family, but his friends, students, colleagues and the entire Barrie community. His selflessness and inspiration will live on in those he touched, including myself. In an increasing cynical world, he was the antithesis, always positive, funny, intelligent, personable to name just a few of his beautiful, admirable attributes.
The occasionally time-worn phrase “Gone, but not forgotten” has never been more appropriate with Martin.
With deepest sympathies and love to Eileen, family and all those who were able to spend time with his physical being and soul.
    Colin

One of the great ones! This shock is hitting us like waves, and with each another happy memory: bringing the TNL dream alive; splitting his pants in the gym; corralling staff in the staff room to help with this, or that; Coach Carl’s sideline pep talk; a pop quiz on April fool’s day; a happy reunion at the Board office. Marty knew that teaching was all about building relationships. It’s clear that he did this in all areas of his life. And it’s why he will be missed so fiercely by so many.

❤️Eileen; Mackenzie, Jake & Pearl; Whitney & Evan; and the Extended Carl Family:

Lucky. That would be the word to describe students and families, when Eileen came to Johnson Street. This placement set off a cherished friendship with the Carls. Getting to know you, Eileen, Martin and your girls was a blessing. Johnson & WR were lucky to have you as Principal, as Eastview was to have Martin, as your girls’ schools are to have them. Students, families, colleauges, peers and community members were fortunate to have his influence, inspiration and devotion to his many roles. I know that this was not and is not taken for granted by any of us. The family business – the teaching legacy – continues through you, Mac and Whit. You have the very best of both of your parents. It’s impossible to reference Martin, without each of you and your mom, so we will not even attempt to do so. A strong, loving family’s lives profoundly intersect.

Selfless. Acts of giving to others. Many visible and so many more behind-the-scenes. Thank you to Martin and to your family for your thoughtfulness. Always and in so many ways. Individuals, families, institutions and communities are all so much better for Martin and the Carl Family.

Adored. The sentiment that you share with each other. One of my favourite pics of any couple is that old pic of you and Martin, Eileen. The first time that I saw it so many years ago, I simply thought, “Goals”. You two up in Thunder Bay, so in love…with your family, careers and contributions ahead of you. It’s the same look that you have in this photo that we attached from your retirement, with you gazing at Martin, as he adoringly (and humorously) honoured you in front of those who love and care for you and your family. The same look that you have as parents (and grandparents). The same feeling that so many have for Martin and for your family.

Esteemed. Martin was respected by so many. Many colleagues, friends, students and families are endebted to him for all of his contributions. Coaches who coached with him and those who coached against, friends, colleagues in Simcoe County and across Ontario all hold admiration for Martin’s efforts, contributions, advocacy, advice, mentorship and care. Martin made that a lasting impact.

Enough. This is what is now lacking. Not enough words to share how sorry we are for your loss. For the loss of Martin on this world and, mostly, on others. Not enough time for anyone who benefitted from knowing Martin. Not enough time for any of you with him. Not enough family occasions, big moments or seemingly small ones. Not enough humility for any of us to truly honour Martin through words. Instead, it will be sought in actions. A perfect request by you, to contribute to one’s community. To reach out in positive ways. To humbly attempt to honour Martin by seeking opportunities to impact change, make connections, build relationships and spread care in a manner that reflects his life and that would make him proud.

Some people are idealized by others. Martin was as authentic and genuine as they come. He consistently demonstrated the same amazing qualities to everyone. Martin will be deeply missed by so many, our family among them.

All of our love, hugs and prayers,

❤️ Stephen, Laura, Connor, Muskoka & the Extended Sclater Family xoxo

I am stunned, and will be for some time over Martin’s passing. He was, in short, what I envision teachers to be. His all round commitment to his students and his players deserves and demands respect. He changed lives. He gave freely to others. He did so with humility and humour. He was a special person who always made me laugh with his booming voice and jokes when we coached against each other. He was one of those people who made others want to be better people by the example he set. The notion of passing something good forward is pure Martin and a perfect way to honor someone’s life and purpose.

I came into the Eastview SS family the same fall as Martin did, 1990, into the Life Skills program. As the years went by, it became obvious how versatile the man was. As stated by others, he wore the various hats of teacher, mentor, councillor, coach, administrator, convenor, advisor, collaborator, cheerleader, and some more identities that I can not think of presently.
An outstanding individual in all walks of life, rest in peace Martin.

My path crossed Martin’s in and about the gyms at Eastview in my last years on staff. Martin and Mark coached football and I could see the dedication and commitment both had to the game and teams. My (Merv Bolton) condolences to Martin’s family.
I (Judi) didn’t know Martin but I did have grand children in W. R. Best P.S. I had opportunities to pick Carter and Lauren up at the school and I was truly impressed with the Principal, whom I later found out was Mrs. Carl.
The atmosphere in that school was so friendly and caring, the students were so happy and polite, I was truly impressed! I did meet Mrs. Carl briefly at those times and she left me with a feeling that W. R. Best was in the BEST of hands.
I am sorry for your loss Mrs. Carl but I know that the love you and your family share will bring you great comfort in the days to come.

To the entire Carl family my heart grieves on the sudden loss of such a special man. A man that made a difference to so many. As a football mom I watched from the sidelines of all of the Eastview games…..even in the rain! May I leave you with this message that hopefully echos the sentiments of so many.

Some people come into our lives

    And quickly go ~

Some people move our souls to dance.

    They awaken us

    to new understanding

with the passing whisper of their wisdom.

Some people make the sky more

    beautiful to gaze upon.

They stay in our lives for awhile, leave

Footprints in our hearts and we are never,

    ever, the same.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Eileen, MacKenzie and Whitney on sudden passing of Martin. Having worked at Eastview since 1972 until 1996 I got to know Martin but not well.
When our great grandson started at Eastview almost 4 years ago, he wanted to play football, but being a short kid the coaches thought he was just to small. Martin and I had quite a few words over this and he finally agreed to a tryout and finally picked Robbie as part of the team. They got along very well and my hat was off to Martin for his patience with Robbie. We will miss Martin and know he will be missed terribly also.

I was and still am shocked to hear this sad news. When I first heard today, I thought about how we often take much for granted. I always think we’ll meet again and I’m so sad that that’s not the case now. I went to Northern Secondary with Martin and we are born in the same year. I knew him as student council president and as an awesome football player for the Northern Red Knights. We shared many laughs and camaraderie. Then life carried us in different directions and we did not meet again until I came to work at Eastview. He was my department chair and I was so grateful to meet up again. I moved to other schools but our paths came together many times in those 25 years and it was always a pleasure. I have great respect for Martin and although we both retired at the same time, I thought we would meet again and that is what I took for granted. I guess his final lesson to me is, enjoy and appreciate each other and the people you meet fully because there may not always be another time. My deepest condolences to Eileen and his daughters and all the people Martin touched in his time. He will be thought of and missed. Strength and healing to you in the days ahead.

I was devastated hearing the news that my friend and former colleague at Eastview SS, Martin Carl, had passed away. Just last June Lynn and I attended his retirement party, it was clear how many lives he had touched and how close he was to his family, his wife Eileen and his two daughters. Martin was a dedicated football coach at Eastview, as well as girls’ hockey and girls’ softball. He was also heavily involved in the organization of school sports in Simcoe County. He cared about “his” sports, but about everyone else’s too.

I can’t begin to touch on all the things Martin did and the lives he touched. On a personal note, when I moved from Innisdale SS to Eastview in 1998, Martin was the first teacher to befriend me and make me feel welcome in my new school. Partly because he was recruiting me to help coach football, but mostly because he was such a good guy. Later on I was proud to have him coach my son Joe in football.

In my own retirement, I was always glad to see Martin whenever I went back to Eastview. He would have a quick (opinionated) word to say about the Raptors, Blue Jays, the NFL, and always, always made me laugh with an anecdote or comment.

Our hearts and prayers goes out to Eileen, Mackenzie, Whitney and family. Martin Carl will be missed by so many people.

He inspired many students and athletes on their life journey throughout their high school years and beyond.

Martin was an absolute giant in education through school sport. I was fortunate to work with Martin on many projects and committees. His genuine love of students and student athletes lead him to be a life long advocate for school sport. As others have stated, he loved football hockey and slo pitch but advocated for all sports. He founded TNL and the Kempenfelt Cup in order to elevate the recognition for those kids striving for excellence. Martin was alll about providing opportunities for students. It is clear that everyone he worked with or coached or taught was impacted by him in a lasting meaningful way. My deepest sympathies to Ei;een and the entire Carl clan. I’m still without words. Martin was such an incredible man, larger than life. He meant so much to so many people in so many different ways. To me Martin was that great leader that a young person or in my case, a young teacher could look up to. Solid as a rock. Always in control and always seemed to know the right things to say and the right things to do. To me, Martin was a great mentor and I’m so thankful to have known him and spent time learning from him at Eastview as well as at the hockey rink. I send my thoughts and prayers to his family. Since hearing the tragic news of Martin’s passing I have been reflecting on how life unfolds. The paces we go. The things we do. But it’s the people and more importantly the friends that we develope along the way that matters. For that I am one very fortunate and luck guy.
Life gets busy, people move, have families, jobs change and life flies by. For many of these reasons I am guilty of not keeping up with many of these friends that I have been blessed with. It has been many years since my days at Lakehead and the TBay Keg where I had the great fortune to have both Martin and Eileen enter my life. I am better for that opportunity.
Thank you Martin for being my friend. You will be sorely missed by many. Rest easy.

Martin Carl was an exceptional individual. He was a friend to my family, a leader in the community and a kind and generous man. He carried with him a sense of humour and an optimism that he frequently shared with those who were fortunate enough to spend time in his presence. Martin was humble, competitive, caring and selfless. He was a tireless visionary. For those of us who continue to negotiate the challenges of life, Martin set the bar high . He was a dedicated and loving husband, father, educator, coach, and simply put , he was just one of the ” good guys “. Martin accomplished so much throughout his years with us. He had so much left to give. This is so sad .

I don’t think anyone of us will ever truly know just how many lives Martin Carl touched. Reading and hearing the stories from so many people confirms the undeniable fact he spent his life selflessly improving the lives of those around him including his athletes and students, his colleagues, and his friends and family. Martin was always planting seeds wherever he went whether it was on the field, in the classroom or in the community. I feel so fortunate to be one of the lives Martin impacted tremendously. I truly believe not only my life but the lives of those who are close to me would not be the same had I not met Martin. Although I am still searching and trying to come to terms with this sudden loss, I know that I will continue to grow and learn from how Martin lived his life and continue to remember him by planting seeds.
