Gloria Sheila McLachlan (nee Skene)

April 9, 1923 – July 25, 2018

Gloria Sheila McLachlan died peacefully at Victoria Village, Barrie in the wee hours of July 25, 2018 in her 95th year.  She was the youngest of seven children of Alexander and Margaret Skene of Aberdeen, Scotland.  Gloria spent her childhood years in the Parkdale District of Toronto before moving to Coxwell and Danforth with her husband.  Although they moved north first to Willowdale, then to Richmond Hill and finally to Barrie to be close to their daughter, Gloria always regarded herself as a “city girl.”  Predeceased by the love of her life, Robert “Bob” McLachlan, in 2001 after 55 years of marriage, she is lovingly survived by her daughter Laura McLachlan of Barrie and her two Grandchildren Amanda Weafer (Daragh) and Trevor Brewer.

Gloria had several jobs before leaving work to care for her home and family.  Most notably she was a bomb girl at GECO, in Scarborough, during WWII and was featured in the 2017 “Bomb Girls- A Documentary”.

Special thanks to the staff at Victoria Village Manor for all their care and support over the past year and a half.

Gloria’s laughter and zest for life made a positive impression on everyone she met.  She will be sorely missed and forever remembered. Cremation has taken place.

Celebration of life to be held at Ferndale Banquet Hall, 24 Ferndale Industrial Dr, Barrie on August 22, 2018 from 4 – 7 pm with memorial to begin at 5:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers the family would greatly appreciate donations can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.

Gloria, you will be missed deeply. I will forever remember your laugh…so genuine and authentic. You loved your visits with family, the dogs, Amanda and Daragh’s wedding, seeing Trevor happy with Michelle, so proud of and appreciative of Laura and your grandchildren. My deepest sympathies to Laura, Trevor, Michelle, Amanda, and Daragh, family and friends.

Enjoyed the talks Gloria and I had when she lived on Sunnidale Road, a very upbeat lady. Sorry to hear of her passing.

    Dear Amanda and family,

I’m sorry for your loss. I didn’t personally meet Gloria, but from what I’ve just read and heard from you in the past, she had an interesting life, and clearly had a big impact on everyone she loved.

Wishing your family peace during this difficult time.

    Love,
    Lisa and Sumeeth
