Michael Popovich

October 23, 1942 - March 1, 2021

Funeral Details:

Popovich, Michael

Michael Popovich, 78, of Lefroy, Ontario, died March 1, 2021 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn, of 56 years, his two sons, Curtis (Moneyone) and David (Stephanie) along with 6 grandchildren Alek, Ryker, Shaddy, Ethan, Damon and Amanda and great grandson, Logan.

He is also survived by his two sisters Olga Popovich and Helen (Jack) Brooks, sister-in-law Judy Popovich (Bill), nephews and nieces Danny, Jason, Jennifer, Michael, Maryann, Meghan and Sarah.  Michael was pre-deceased by brother’s Bill and George.

Born in Welland, to immigrant parents, Basil and Mary Popovich, Michael attended Vaughan Road Collegiate, George Brown and Seneca Colleges. He went on to have a successful and varied career in journalism, real estate, and municipal politics.

Notably, while writing for the Toronto Telegram, Michael was awarded the National Newspaper Award for a candid featured story on the life and death of a 28-year-old drug addict.  His articles and photos have appeared in Time, Life Magazine, Maclean’s, Saturday Night, Reader’s Digest, and the Globe & Mail. Michael then went on to build his own successful Real Estate Business, while serving two terms as Municipal Councilor for Markham’s Ward 7.

Michael had many interests – jogging, tennis, politics, the Ukrainian language, but most of all he just loved to learn.

Michael was a loving husband, father, and friend.  He will be sorely missed.

I always looked forward to seeing Mike on my daily dog walks. He was such an interesting guy to talk to whether it was the stock market or politics. I would always want to hear his opinion on the state of things. I enjoyed helping him with whatever technical issues he ran into from lawnmower troubles to electrical. He would often ride is bicycle over to my place with some interesting questions. I truly considered Mike a friend. We will really miss him.

Our condolences to all the family. Death is a sting, not part of the creators plan. Know he was loved, as his family is loved to.
May the god of comfort be with you in the days ahead.

My uncle Mike was a great man! I will always remember the good times we all shared together at cottage. All those “moment capturing” photos he took and shared of all us on those family expeditions.
It’s with a heavy heart to say you will sorely be missed.
My sincere condolences to my Aunt Evelyn, my cousins Curtis and David and Aunt Helen and Ulga.
I wish we could all be together at this time – but hopefully soon we will be allowed to get together to honour him!
    Love you Uncle Mike!

I too met Mike on my daily dog walk on his street over 8 years ago. Mike was a prodigious walker and we enjoyed any and all discussions while standing usually in the middle of the road as the car traffic had to go around us. To the family, I am very sorry for your loss.
    Mike will be missed!!

Mike is my brother-in-law. He was a good man. He was very intelligent, caring and loving. Mike was always looking to learn new things while sticking close to his roots, from his youthful farming days to his entrepreneurial career. and his love for his Ukrainian upbringing. He was an accomplished writer, real estate executive and municipal politician. I always found him to be very cerebral, pragmatic and insightful.

He was a very loving family man and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

My condolences to Evelyn, Curtis and David and their families.

Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to my sister-in-law Evelyn, to my nephews, Curtis and David on the loss of a dear husband and loving father. Our greatest memories of Michael were the times we all gathered as a family and enjoyed the many outings with our children on the farm in Stouffville. Michael enjoyed making maple syrup in our little sugar bush with his sons and nephews, Dan and Jason and niece MaryAnne. We all treasured these special times because he taught us so much about the great outdoors. He taught me about picking wild leeks and how great they were to eat. Michael had so many interests in life and was such a talented journalist. He will always be remembered as a loving uncle to my children and a supportive and caring brother-in-law. Michael you will be missed by us all and the fun times we had at the cottage. We are so sorry that due to these times we cannot be together but we will honor Michael in our hearts. Rest in peace dear friend.
Our love to all of you. Judy and Family.

Our deepest sympathies to all the family. We have very fond memories of Mike when we were growing up. We often reminisce about our fun times during those carefree days, especially our experiences swimming in the Innisfil Creek together. May all our memories be a blessing.

Mike was my big brother who I admired and loved very much. He was an amazing person who loved and appreciated his wife Evie dearly. He was the very proud father of his two sons Curtis and David and their extended families.

He accomplished many things professionally, but his love for the outdoors and all aspects of nature was where his heart was. He enjoyed studying horticulture as a hobby and loved biking and walking through his community identifying trees and shrubs. He also loved tinkering with engines & electronics and mastered technology. He just wanted to learn about them and maintain them.

I have many wonderful memories with my brother Mike which I will treasure forever. Special memories from our early years on the farm in Cookstown, our adolescent and adult years in Toronto and cottage and our later years biking through the neighbourhoods in Innisfil.

I love my big brother Mike. I miss him already.

Our sincere condolences on the loss of your father and brother. You always spoke so highly of your Dad, Curtis. We had the opportunity of meeting him at your wedding, and remember how kind he was when we chatted.

My sincere condolences to my Auntie Evie, my cousins Curtis and David and Aunt Helen and Olga.
I remember the time my uncle lived in Thornhill and I was going to Ukrainian dancing lessons at the parish on John Street for about 2 years every Thursday after school . I would walk a mile to his house to see him and Auntie Evie. They were very understanding very giving and kind
as I would wait to be picked up by my father. I remember some of the most memorable and amazing times at the cottage up in Lefroy . swimming in the lake “stealing pickles jars out of the cellar ”, watching Georgy laugh and seeing my uncle Mike laughing with my Dad and my Baba. Also Baba chasing me, Curtis, Jason and David out of the garden for some crazy thing a can’t remember. Thinking about all the times visiting us up in Stouffville fishing and swimming in the pond, remembering the time we went to Nova Scotia with Uncle Mike, Auntie Evie, Curtis and David. Uncle Mike collected 100 clams to make clam juice. I remember good times with my cousins living on Bathurst Street when we snuck a glass of dandelion wine that Uncle Mike had distilled a month earlier (that was my first glass of wine).

Thinking of you at this difficult time and understanding how hard this is to lose someone from cancer (the worst five letter word I’ve ever known).

    Dear Evelyn,

My mother, Mira, would like to extend her sincere condolences to you on the passing of your beloved husband, Michael. She worked with you at Hume’s Transport in the early 1970s. She was heartbroken to hear of your loss. She remembers the fond conversations you both had about your husband and children. She wanted to reach out and send her sympathies to you and your family. May God protect you and your family during this time of grief.
