Patricia Joan Anne Taylor

November 10, 1935 – November 3, 2022

Just shy of her 87th birthday, Joan Taylor (née Collins) peacefully passed away in the early morning of November 3rd in Aurora, Ontario. Predeceased by her mother Gwyneth (née Scott, d. 1939) and father Arthur (d. 1963), and partner and best friend of 60+ years, Earle Taylor (d. 2019), Joan’s memory will forever be cherished by a widespread community of family and friends.

Born in Victoria, British Columbia, Joan was raised there by her adoring father. After graduating from the Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing, Joan moved east for adventure with friends to work at the Kingston General Hospital. There she met Earle, who was completing his surgical training. They married in Oxford, U.K. in 1959, then worked in Liverpool before returning to Canada in 1960, establishing their lives in Prince Edward County.

Joan brought a large and loving brood into this world, including Ian, Ross, Jim (Tanja), Jane (Steve), Cam (Suzanne) and Susie (Dave). She is adored by - and has always been an adoring fan of - grandkids Lily (Stephen) and Sally, Nina, Will and Elizabeth, and Fin. Cherished by Fin’s mom, Wendy. Loved and missed by Earle’s sister, Lesley Taylor of Montreal, who’s glad that Joan looked beyond Earle’s first date choice of the bus station restaurant in Kingston!

For many, the fondest memories of Joan are richly rooted in 101 Bridge Street, Picton, which served as home and haven for over 50 years. Here, Joan’s radiant warmth, hospitality and thoughtful, curious nature offered comfort and care to anyone who popped in and plunked themselves down at the kitchen table. Truly, this was the beating heart of the household where delicious meals were doled out and conversation flourished among a family that sat elbow-to-elbow. Joan never lacked for love or community, nor the capacity to manage the household’s daily mayhem with grace and good humour. Throughout this, music from an array of instruments flowed and filled the house at various decibels throughout the day. Her escape was just steps away, whether in the surrounding gardens that thrived in her care, immersing herself in community theatre, or ensconced in a comfortable chair at the corner of the verandah. This was her self-declared happy place, be it with the newspaper or a biography, coffee or a G&T in hand - though preferably with good company and conversation. Her legacy of quiet strength and maternal spirit will live on through all of us and in that, we’re consoled by the notion that she’ll always be present in our thoughts and memories.

The Taylor family is profoundly grateful to the compassionate and loving staff at the Chartwell Park Place Retirement Residence in Aurora for their tender and expert care as she lived out her days.

A private family remembrance has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday May 12th, 2023 at Prince Edward Yacht Club (30 Fairfield St., Picton, On.,) from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  Remembrances will be shared at 4:00 p.m.  A Private Family internment will follow. What a lovely tribute to your mother. Our heartfelt condolences to you and the large and loving brood. I (Kirsten) remember your mother when we had a day trip to the County and had lunch at an amazing restaurant on a hill overlooking the lake. She was so engaging and engaged in conversations, and it was such a delight to meet her. She showed us around the house in Picton that shone with love through the photos and memories of a life so well lived. She will live on in all of you.

Joan and Earle were the first to befriend us as new people to the community. There were many times that we sat in their kitchen, arms on the table to discuss books, music and art. They were the stimulation in our lives and we enjoyed every minute spent with them. They will be remembered in this community as well as in the Chambers’ memories. They are missed! We send our regards to all the Taylors and their families.

I spent some quality time next door at Jane’s, chatting with Joan over a cuppa. She was charming, intelligent and funny. Her family was blessed to have had such an interesting and loving mom. These qualities are reflected in Jane and Sooz, two of the ‘sibs’ I know well.

Our first memory of Joan was meeting her at a post-play Arts Council get-together in the early ‘80s. She was still in costume (something 60s’-ish, with a pillbox hat, I believe) and I assumed she was a pro actress, with her easy manner and gorgeous smile. She and Earle were so kind to Peter and me, and always interested in our doings as newcomers, and asking about our children. In more recent years, we enjoyed seeing her at the Post Office — still lighting up the street with her smile — and having a wee chat. She was a real lady: generous, gracious, always with the twinkle in her eye.
