Penny Bell

May 22, 1941 - March 2, 2021

Funeral Details: Saturday, October 16th at 2:00 p.m. St. James United Church in Stroud or via ZOOM - see the link in the notice below.

Penny Ann Bell (nee Petersen) surrendered after a long, relentless battle with COPD and respiratory disease March 2nd. Penny originally conquered cancer in 2000, continuing to soldier on through multiple health issues, she was a fighter to the end.  Penny will always be the precious, patient, caring companion, office teammate and devoted wife to David Casson Bell as well as the extremely supportive and admiring Mother of Julie, Pete and James.  Penny will remain the adoring Nana of Jack, Emersen and Zoë, as well as the constantly grateful mother-in-law to Darren Gropp, Kathy Bell, Karen Woodhead-Bell, and Lee Neiman.  Penny’s humour, tenacity and spirit were infectious.  She was a proud Graduate of Branksome Hall, member of St. James Church, and contributor to the Original Kirby’s Beach Cognashene Boss Moms club, once creating swim badges for EVERY swim student.  Penny was a fearless (ish) hunter of snakes, server of tea and provider of cuddles, seeker of sunsets, devotee of spring colours, birds and squirrels.  Though small in stature, Penny’s heart and giving spirit were enormous, bringing humour and joy to everyone she came in contact with. She is irreplaceable and we are forever better for having her in our lives.

A service and Celebration of Life will be held at St. James United Church in Stroud on Saturday, October 16th at 2 p.m.  Tented Overflow seating may be available.  Remote viewing will be available via the Zoom link below.  Refreshments will be served after the service.  Please feel free to wear spring colours, something that reminds you of Penny, or something that brings you joy.  Please be advised that local COVID protocols will be in place.

Penny – I will remember you as a wonderful friend who would go the mile for anyone and everyone. You and Cass were friends from the time I met the “Group” up until the last time we were together. The word tenacity pops out at me when I read your obituary and you certainly had a lot of that along with humour, curiosity and compassion. My son Jon was a great friend of Pete, Cass coaching hockey with the two of them and Jon hanging out at your house all the time. His invitations to Georgian Bay were the highlight of his summer. You kept a watchful eye on both of them graciously keeping them under your wing. And they were never aware of your care. Your gracious hospitality was well known to everyone. You will be sadly missed by Cass, all your family and friends. I will miss you my friend. You will always be with us. Love to you and all your family. Brenda Burak
