It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Sandor Olcsvary, who departed peacefully and smoothly at 89 years of age surrounded by his family on April 11, 2023.  Sandor was a humble, kind and generous person, and at times a real character.

He is predeceased by his wife Vanda and survived by his two loving daughters, Vera (David) and Monica (Steve), four grandchildren, Mark (Gillian), Laura, Michael (Alyssa), Robert and two great-grandchildren Lucas and James.  Sandor will also be missed by family and friends in Hungary.

Sandor was born in 1934 in Hungary and immigrated to Canada in 1957 where he met Vanda shortly thereafter in Toronto.  Having studied engineering in Hungary, he easily transitioned to a career as a surveyor.  Two daughters, 36 years and innumerable memories later, Vanda and Sandor moved to Barrie in 2001 after his retirement.  He then began his second career as an avid Bridge player. His passion for bridge led him to meet many friends along the road to becoming a Ruby Life Master, which was one of his proudest accomplishments.

Numbers were something Sandor excelled at and was keen on teaching about it, whether it be Roman Numerals, math, time, chess, or similar.  He was passionate about education and bestowed upon his grandchildren the importance of this.  Having all four grandchildren become working professionals made him a very proud Nonno.

Sandor’s additional passions were gardening and cooking.  He had a green thumb and loved to spend time outdoors with his fruit trees and vegetable garden.  If you had the privilege of tasting Sandor’s cabbage rolls or chicken paprikash, you know they were always made with love.

Although we are deeply saddened by his passing, it brings us peace knowing that his unique sense of humour is now entertaining those in a better place.

Our deepest condolences Vera, Monica and the entire family… Mr. O. was such an amazing man while he walked on earth and I have the sweetest memories of him. My dad knew him as his customer at the barbershop for many years and thought so highly of him. I will always remember how nice he was when I would come to your house on Bluehaven. His life was a true testimony of what is important in life – family, respect and patience. Heaven has gained an incredible angel that is for sure! Sending you all so much love, Anna, Maria, Sandra, Eddy, Fred and Don

We will miss Sandor. During our drives to the bridge club, he entertained us with many stories about growing up in Hungary and his new life here in Canada. We could feel the love he had for his family when he spoke of them. We always enjoyed his company.

Our condolences at the loss of your dad, father in law and grandfather.
He is remembered as a light hearted man full of zest and laughter. His telling of the delivery of his daughter will be one of the fondest memories I have.
His reputation as a fierce and competitive bridge player preceded him. Our thoughts are with you. I hope you have comfort knowing he was able to leave with dignity surrounded by those he loved .

I had the pleasure of knowing Sandor for a little over two years. I was his support worker and looked forward to seeing him almost everyday. Sandor taught me Roman Numerals and shared his stories with me. Sandor was so proud of his family, I’m so glad I met them. Sandor was a kind and very special person to me, I will miss him.

I had the pleasure of knowing Sandor through the Barrie Bridge Club. I called him the King of 3NT which was his contract of choice. He was my partner on occasion and till the end was a wonderful player. I will miss him at the club always brought a laugh and a smile.
