With sadness and heartache, we share the news that Stewart Ernest Goheen, age 72, of Barrie, Ontario, has died on March 4th, 2024 in hospital at Merida, Mexico. His sudden passing has left a wave of shock and sorrow with the family, who remember his warmth, dependability and charisma as a foundational part of their lives.
Stewart was born on May 18th, 1951 in Barrie, Ontario and raised by his parents Ernest and Myra Goheen in Stroud, Ontario. He continued to hold small town values of community, cooperation, and duty to family throughout his life. It would be these values he would employ in spades to build a successful property maintenance business that he would end his career running.
As a husband, he is remembered fondly and with ever-lasting love as a true gentleman to Joyce Harrison, who Stewart married on February 4th, 1978. They had 3 strong and beautiful daughters, Kelly, Karey, and Katelin who remember their loving father with admiration for his dutiful and unwavering support.
An avid sports fan, Stewart loved playing golf, watching his beloved Green Bay Packers, and enjoyed playing fantasy football with his family and friends all of whom feel the great void left by Stewart’s passing, the strong handshakes he gave now just a cherished memory to hold onto.
As “Papa”, Stewart loved above all spending time with his grandchildren, who all speak of their love for “Papa’s bear hugs” and how they’ll miss his “silliness”. For them especially he is gone much too soon. Whether at the cottage in the summer, or at their winter home in Progreso, Mexico, Papa always valued spending time with family.
Stewart is survived by his wife Joyce, children Jason Gault, Kelly (Harrison White), Karey (Kevin Jacquemain) and Katelin (Robert Cole), grandchildren Hayden White, Lincoln Cole, Sebastian White, Blake Jacquemain, Quinn Jacquemain, Huxley Cole, Sloane White and Juneau Cole, siblings Sheila (Ernie Goebel), Steven (Susan Brocklebank), and Paul, and brothers in-law Rod Harrison (Janice Taylor) and Tim Harrison (Kathy Mitchinson), many nieces and nephews as well as honorary family members Fred and Rosie Rodgers.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Myra Goheen, father and mother in-law Arthur and Catherine Harrison, and brother in-law Brian Harrison.
Stewart’s family would like to acknowledge the Mexican community whose warm welcoming nature and endless assistance helped to reaffirm their faith in humanity.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 21st, 2024 from 1pm-4pm at the Southshore Community Centre, 205 Lakeshore Dr., Barrie, Ontario. This event will honour Stewart’s memory through shared love, storytelling, and remembrance of how he touched our lives.
