Memory of Me

I’d like the memory of me,

to be a happy one.

I’d like to leave and afterglow,

of smiles when the day is done.

I’d like to leave an echo,

whispering softly down the ways.

Of happy times,

and laughing times,

and bright sunny days.

I’d like the tears of those who grieve,

to dry before the sun.

Of happy memories I leave behind,

when the day is done.

The Night Shift band has welcomed a new member. Their gain is our loss.

Ted was and remains one of the Elders of jazz in Simcoe County. I say “remains” because though he may not be on the bandstand in person, his presence will linger.

Ted’s support and encouragement of local music and local musicians was legendary, across all genres of music.

And his was the beat of the different drummer others marched to.

Had the pleasure to teach with Ted but also to fill in on drums playing for Ted with the Figs. He was well loved by the students he taught. May he enjoy the music up and beyond. I will miss my friend and fellow drummer

I was fortunate to have had Mr. Fry as a teacher. It was him that brought in a snare drum, a hi-hat and sticks for me to use. I believe I was 11 or 12. I kept that set up until I bought my first real set of drums. As years passed, Mr. Fry became Ted when I would watch his band or just have a beer with him wherever they were playing. A really great guy that got me turned on to music for the rest of my life. Rest in Peace Sir.

Our thoughts go to Gwen and Greg and the rest of the family. My memories of Uncle Ted and Aunt Gerry go back to watching sunsets on the rocky island at Honey Harbour, playing the wash-bucket bass in the kids jazz band around the campfire, and listening to Chicago jazz on the radio in the cottage on rainy evenings. I’ll raise one for you Ted, Cheers.
