Carol Ann Martin

January 20, 1944 - October 17, 2020

Funeral Details:

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Carol Ann Martin with family at her side at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on Saturday, October 17th, 2020.  Beloved wife of the late Arthur Martin and cherished mother of the late Rob Martin.  Cherished mother of Ryan, daughter-in-law Marie and an adored wonderful Grandmother of Madelyn and Charlie Martin.   Carol was the daughter of the late Charles and Eleanor Agnew, and daughter-in-law of the late Sid and Hannah Martin.  Carol is survived by her sister and best friend Beverley Ornella (Gary), brother Terry Agnew (Teresa), predeceased by sister Linda Agnew, and brothers Charles Agnew and Paul Agnew.  Carol will be sincerely missed by her in-laws Linda Agnew, Joy Farrow-Agnew, Shirley Ann Forget (the late Eddie Forget), and Judy & Jim Brady.  Carol will be greatly missed by her family of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, many friends and her nursing classmates.  She always loved getting together with family and attending her Nursing Reunions to reminisce about all the fun times and catching up on each other’s lives.

Carol was born in Peterborough, ON and moved to Barrie with her parents in 1945.  She attended Barrie North Collegiate and graduated from the Royal Victoria School of Nursing in 1964.  After graduation, she started her career at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, ON returning to Barrie to marry her high school sweetheart and to continue her nursing at RVHRHC in the Operating Room and Orthopaedic Fracture Clinic until her retirement in 1999. Carol loved life to the fullest, her family, and enjoyed playing softball (inducted to Barrie Sports Hall of Fame as Provincial Champion Monarch Butterflies), curling, golfing (member of Bear Creek), downhill skiing, avid reader and sports enthusiast, and enjoyed her travels of many places around the globe. Carol’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, watching them grow into beautiful, thoughtful, loving young adults, cheering them on at their baseball games, and simply hanging out with them.

Her family wishes to send a special thank you to the medical staff at RVRHC for the exceptional care and compassion she received.

Memorial donations may be made in Carol’s name to the Royal Victoria Regional Hospital Foundation, foundation.rvh.on.ca or the charity of your choice.

A wonderful lady, always had a smile on her face. She was a mentor to me when I was in nursing school and my head nurse for many years in the start of my nursing career. She always looked out for her patients and fellow nurses she definitely took no crap! Lol I was lucky to know her personally & professionally. RIP I’m sure Art and Rob were waiting for her. My heart aches for those she left behind. 😇😘

I am proud to have been a friend to Carol for over 57 years and I was privileged to witness her graduation for the RVH School of Nursing on June 3, 1964, when my wife Joan was also among her graduating classmates. When I think of Carol, I recall her and Art’s love for a good party, whether it be in their 1st apartment on High St. or on Peel St., or in their house on Miller Dr., or in their house on Edgehill Drive. Carol was a driving force on many planning committees for several reunions of her RVH classmates over the years and she was a knowledgeable and loyal fan of Toronto Blue Jays Baseball. Carol was admired by many people in the medical profession and after her retirement from nursing, she continued to be of service to people when she operated her own nail salon business in downtown Barrie. She will be truly missed by her family and her wide network of friends. May She Rest in Peace.

Condolences to all the Martin family. Art, Carol, Jim and I enjoyed many fun social events when we were involved in Jaycee’s and Jaycette’s. Some of the most memorable times was going to the Martin cottage on Doe Lake and snowmobiling. Art and Carol were always a lot of fun with a great sense of humour. Whenever we got together you knew you were in for a good time!

Where do I begin…. Carol has been like a sister to me for almost 70 years. So many memories, Grey Cup Parades, Girls Get A Ways, Agnew Family functions and so much more. Carol even took both our boys for ski WEEKS (brave girl!). Her smile was infectious and those beautiful eyes sparkled with life and fun. Ryan, Marie, Madelyn, Charlie, Bev, Terry and all the Agnew and Martin families, please know that our arms are wrapped around all of you in comfort and love, today and always. God definitely has a new angel in heaven with him.
All our love, as always, Heather Wayne, Brett, Craig and Families.

I would need a book to write all the memories we have and all of the ways that “Auntie” Carol touched all of our lives. From summer swims, to the showers she threw for Beth and for me, wing nights at Tiffs, to so many evenings my parents spent with she and art enjoying wine in the hot tub and dinners together. I remember when I used to call her from B.C. and accidentally wake her up because I forgot about the time change. She never ever complained and always told me how glad she was to talk to me.
Looking at that gorgeous face and those incredible eyes, I am struck with one thought; what will we ever do without her?
Carol Agnew Martin was one-of-a-kind. Stylish, fun, unfailingly kind and generous, gorgeous, and, of course eternally fabulous. She is irreplaceable and I will always be grateful to have had her in all of our lives.
Our sincere condolences go out to Ryan and Marie, Madelyn and Charlie, the Agnew and Martin families. We are thinking of you.
Thank you for you, Auntie Carol. Rest in peace. xo
