Dylan Giovenazzo

March 15, 1988 - December 31, 2020

Funeral Details:

We have all lost, in Dylan, a generous, intelligent, exuberant, and empathetic man.   He will be lovingly remembered by his mother Mira, father Carmine, and sister Samantha.  Dylan was extremely charismatic, and brought exceptional energy, fun and enthusiasm to all of his endeavours.  He will be missed by his nephews, Frankie and Charlie, who remember their Uncle D as a funny, thoughtful and loveable dude.  To his friends, Dylan was loyal, dependable, and present.  Dylan will be deeply missed, but lovingly remembered by all those who knew him, specifically for his humour, and passion for sports, music, and his love for his dog, Gaia.

In lieu of flowers, or donations, we kindly ask the Toronto Maple Leafs to win a cup in Dylan’s honour.

Dyl, we love you and will miss you forever.

I met Dylan at Mac Hall in Windsor. It was not long after meeting him that he literally gave me the shirt of his back. Over the years he would show his friendship to me by being the person that kept in touch with me when I left school. His light will glow in my memory for as long as I am alive.

    Rest in peace Dylan

Saying goodbye to an older cousin is not just saying goodbye to a lifelong friend, but it is also saying goodbye to your childhood role model. I, like many others gravitated towards you. You made me feel safe, you always made me feel welcome (even though I was probably the annoying little cousin), and you always made me feel loved. Pool parties, family barbecues, hockey games, music will never be the same. I feel so fortunate that many memories with you helped shape my childhood. I will cherish these for the rest of my life.

In high school (and afterwards) you considered yourself my “bodyguard“. I have never seen anyone jump into protection mode quicker than you. If a guy were to say “hi”, your first reaction was to ‘buff up’ and say something along the lines of “she’s my cousin, you know that right?”. Somehow , it worked every time. Everyone knew not to mess with me. I was another “Giovenazzo” at high school; somehow everyone knew what that meant. I wouldn’t change that for the world. I loved that you wanted to protect me. I loved that you cared so much about family that you weren’t scared of the consequences. I loved that you saw me as who I was and safeguarded my heart. You took care of the people you loved. You would give your left arm to see any of us smile.

Yesterday’s news broke many of us. Dyl; you were one of a kind. Always smiling, always had a funny/witty remark & always brightened up every room that you walked into. Your memory is eternal.

I’ll think of you in every leafs game I watch, every team Canada win and every snowboard that I ride. You were an amazing cousin and more importantly, an amazing person. I’m feeling so fortunate for the 30 years of memories with you that I have been gifted.

I heard a song yesterday that said “But no one really dies if the love remains”. I like to believe this to be true. Not many people get to have such an amazing relationship with their older cousins. I’m one of the lucky ones.

My condolences to all family and friends.

But I know you are still listening to my chatter as you enjoy life everlasting in peace & pain free with your puppy,Please continue to watch over your brothers & friends. I first met Dylan Giovenazzo in 2003, when this new kid known as Shaggy from Toronto, moved to the Point. This was grade 11, and I would see him around the halls of Innisdale. We didn’t have any classes together that year, as I was in Global, but we had some mutual friends. I would see him at parties, places such as Marc-Alexander Douris’s Basement. Shags was always the life of the party.
In grade 12, I remember he and I were in Mr. Trahn’s last period class. It was a fun class but it was filled with class clowns and shit disturbers. At the start of the year Vetter and I started on one side of the class, and Shags started on the other side. By the middle of the semester a series of pranks and class clown jokes had by both of us, had us moved together. We got along great…. 5 greatest rappers Dylon,Dylon, Dylon, Dylon and Dylon… I spit hot fire. I think that seating arrangement lasted maybe a week and we were in opposite sides of the room again. That summer I would still see Shaggy from time to time, but I left for Windsor for school in August.
A year passes we lost touch, but I heard through the grapevine that Dylan moved to Windsor for school. Sure enough I was driving down main drag of UofW first day of school and see a familiar figure walking down the sidewalk. I pull over lay on my Oldsmobiles horn and yelled Shaggy!!! He jumped into my car, and from that moment on he never left my life. As I put my Olds into drive, I didn’t know it at the time but I now had a brother and it was one hell of a road.
From hanging out and carpooling back and forth from Windsor to Barrie and Back, we learned we had a lot in Common. We were both two diehard Maple Leafs surrounded in a sea of Red Wing fans. Through watching games and playing poker, we found ourselves with more family. Guys that today I’m proud to call my brothers. The times we had while we were young. The wild parties including live band living room mosh pits that attracted 5 or 6 cop car after 3 songs, DH trivia nights, to concerts to playing pool at Big Dicks, these were the glory years. We watched a lot of hockey, the Leafs sucked so bad then we would just be happy to get a point from an OT loss. “OT Loss = Maple Leafs Victory”, we would yell and jump across the room. Looking back I think it was quiet days I cherish the most, the Sundays we would pick up a case of beer and go to the Italian market to get the ingredients for Sauce Day. All day we would play NHL and Dylan would cook his family’s special tomato sauce.
From time to time trouble would come, but it passed. D was always there for the boys. Loyalty was not just a word for him, he lived for it. Tough and fearless I don’t think was every really scared of any challenge and would do what needed to be done to help a friend, regardless the cost. Back in 2014, When I needed a break away from Windsor for a few months, Dylan opened his home.
I returned back to Windsor, but we were always in touch, either through video games, wedding road trips, get togethers, cottage trips, phone calls about The Leafs or Team Canada, or he just wanted to rub it in that he beat my team in fantasy hockey that week. I think fondly to a recent phone call we had, looking at the recent NHL draft lists, making each other laugh by finding the player with the funniest name.
In the last month Dylan put up one hell of a fight. A fight to be proud of, but sometimes life falls out of ones control. This morning I lost a dear friend, a true brother who always had my back. Shaggy, Dylon, D, Brother thank you for jumping into my Oldsmobile that day. I’ll see you on the next road.
We were young we flew sky high, then time aged us, but we were not old enough to say goodbye.

Spring 2010 my buddy Dylan Giovenazzo came to my place and hung out in front of my midi keyboard. He told me to set up a track with a piano. I did. He played. It was sick. I recorded him and used it later to make a beat. I used that beat to make a song. It came out pretty cool. He was pumped. We were living. We were having fun. Life was good. Today I found out that this morning my friend Dylan passed away. I was sad. It broke my heart. I fired up my old computer and listened to our song. Then I opened up some software and started playing with the piano. A riff wrote itself for me. I made a little beat. It was fun. I thought of Dylan. He was there. RIP my friend. Til we meet again. I’ll load the song up soon. You can see how cool he was on the keys.

I met Dylan Giovenazzo only once. In Atlanta, at a rave circa 2014. We were instant homies. Guy spoke like we’d known each other our whole lives. We knew hockey and good music, and talked all night. We went almost a decade without speaking after our night of heavy bass music and drinks. This past June, Dylan invited me to Canada to hang out, and i didn’t have the means to come. But he remembered me. After ten years. I can’t imagine what his friends and family are going through, because what i got in one night is what yall got every day from him. Rest easy, Dylan. A good soul.

It seems like just yesterday we were teeing up on 14 at Simoro. Your driving was good, but something magical happened that day. You hit the cleanest drive I’ve ever seen and the ball ended up going over 400 yards easily. For months we heard about how you drove it 500 yards and how it was the longest drive anyone had ever hit. The joke was funny every single time. You absolutely crushed it, but added that little extra over the top flare we all loved about you.

You were the first friend I made in high school. You made Innisdale a lot less scary, and a lot more enjoyable. Our love of football brought us together, the experiences we shared over the years made us brothers. I have a lot of really fond memories of you Dylan. It’s devastating knowing we won’t ever tee it up again, hit our handshake, or just laugh for hours about nothing.

Anyone that knew you knew you were a great guy with an amazing sense of humour. Someone that would go to war with you if you needed help. A real friend in every sense of the word. You’re someone I’m thankful to have met, and grown up with.

We’re all hurting really bad, but we know you’re not in pain anymore. Rest In Peace Brother. Until we meet again 💔

You have no one a last farewell, Nor ever said good-bye.
You were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why.
A million times we will miss you, and a million times we will cry.
If love alone could have saved you,
    You never would have died.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a place, no one else can fill.
It broke out hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you, the day God took you home.

Mira, Carmine, Sam and Brandon (and kids).
Saying I am so sorry, does not express the deep level of sadness and grief my heart feels for you. You lost a great son, the world lost an amazing human being. Be proud to know how you raised a loyal, caring, funny, smart and hard working person. Know that he loved you deeply. He was so proud his mom was a teacher, he idolized his dad and bragged about his sister and later on Brandon and their Children. He loved and felt love. When it hit the fan, I couldn’t of asked for a better friend. If someone was down he would make sure they were picked back up. He did things that could never be repaid back to him, but even if they could his big heart wouldn’t accept. His laugh filled the room, but his ideas could fill a universe.
May he be at Peace. I’m sorry we lost him at the end.

Dylan was a supportive and loyal brother, I will miss him every single day for the rest of my life. He was so proud of his friends and family, the first to celebrate any and all accomplishments with vigour. He was always the most fun person in the room, the person everyone naturally gravitated towards. He was passionate and wore his heart on his sleeve. Family events will never be the same, I will miss his bone-crushing high fives, bear hugs, jokes I didn’t quite get, intense pool competitions, and above all else, his infectious laugh. My kids will miss out on a top-tier uncle who put their happiness above all else. That was Dyl, he put everyone else ahead of himself. Miss you, little bro. Keep watching down on us, we need you.

I am still in so much shock since hearing the news of Dylan’s passing. My heart hurts so much for his family. I remember the day I walked outside and saw some tiny random kid with his shirt off playing Basketball in our back yard with Adam. I’m like wtf Adam who is this? He’s like I don’t know he just came out of the bushes! I’m like what!! He’s like yea from “over there” and pointed to the left through the neighbours yards. Dylan then turns and is like “hey, you playing with us.” I’m like wtf DUH, this is my house. We then all take a couple shots and Dylan’s like yea, you can be friends with my sister so then we can all be friends! I’m like WHAT you have a sister? Ok! So then we all sneak through the neighbours yard and go to his house to meet Sammy. From there, we created sooooo many childhood memories that people would be jealous of. From riding bikes, holding our breath “there and back” in his pool, playing Marco Polo, jumping over the pool chairs into the pool – Dylan won every time I’m pretty sure, jumping off the top of the slide, dirt biking on the 50cc, playing baseball, boating, wakeboarding, tubing, him finding a rabid fox thinking it was a dog and trying to pet it (Sam and I heard the story when him and Adam got home)…Then Mira called 911 about the fox, clearly he herded more foxes over because then one ate Sam’s duck that she found…Sam then lost her crap at Dylan as if it was actually his fault lol, playing golf at the country club, all of us riding bikes to the BBP store, biking off the dock, sneaking over and eating the neighbours berries.. I could seriously go on and on… these memories are so imbedded into my head which I’m extremely grateful for. It makes me sad we can’t debate anymore in my basement as we became adults. You are someone that clearly made an impact on many individuals’ lives and I’m truly blessed I was one of them. You are extremely missed and I hope you are having yourself a glass of AADFCM up there! Love you Dyl!! ❤️
My deepest condolences go out to Sam, Mira, Carmen and all of his family during this time.

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. Although I didn’t know him, he seemed like a wonderful guy,
taken much too young. May your memories give you strength during this most difficult time. From an East coast relative on Miras side.

I remember Dylan’s beautiful smiles and loving hugs. He had gifted social skills and an uncanny ability to make all feel welcome and at home. I loved seeing him so happy when working outdoors with his favorite music playing in the background. The flowers that he planted in my backyard will be an eternal memory of Dylan’s love, creativity and talent.
May your loving and kind soul no longer know pain and may it rest in peace forever.
    Will miss you, Dylan,

In everyone’s life story, there are hundreds maybe thousands of people one meets over their lifespan. Each person has a different impact on ones life. Some people leave no impact, some people are footnotes, some get a sentence, others a paragraph or two. The more they impacted someone the more they become part of that persons life. The more important people get a chapter. In my life story, Dylan Giovenazzo gets a whole damn book.

I am still in so much shock since hearing the news of your passing. I am sorry to you and your family that it has taken me a while to say something on here because words can’t exactly explain what I want to say. I am sooo sorry I hadn’t reached out to you lately. We tend to get so caught up in our own daily lives and forget those lives that have been of importance to us throughout our life. We seem to think everyone is ok and will be ok until life shows us differently. I remember the day I walked outside and saw some tiny random kid with his shirt off playing Basketball in our back yard with Adam. I’m like wtf Adam who is this? We are beyond heartbroken to learn of your devastating loss. We fondly remember many afternoon playdates, fun by the pool & sleepovers at the cottage in “younger” days. Dyl was such a sweet, warm, sensitive caring & giving soul. In more recent days, Dyl’s beaming smile & accompanying effervescent personality lit up every room he entered. What a bold, charming & enthusiastic spirit …. Dyl certainly left indelible imprints on our lives … & so sadly has left us all much too soon.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to each of you & know that our love & support are here for you ALWAYS>

Many of us remember Dyl as a remarkable little kid, full of energy, and never without a witty remark. He was funny, smart, generous, and kind.

Every time we spoke, he told me he loves me.

Love you, little bro. Keep watching down on us, we need you.

I was lucky to know Dylan from a very young age. I remember carpooling with Dylan, Samantha and my brother. Spent probably over 5,000 km in the car with him. We had a lot of amazing memories. I remember the parties at Mira’s house for Christmas and one year I had convinced Dylan that his mom made “nasty ass” turkey. Once Dylan heard that it was sealed that every Christmas we were eating “nasty ass” turkey. Dyl had a kind heart and was a very generous person. We will miss you very much big guy.

Thank you to everyone for sharing your special memories, precious anecdotes, and sincere condolences on the loss of this unique and beloved individual, that was my son, Dylan. Throughout his young life I always respected and admired him for his strong sense of justice and his insatiable curiosity. He was always welcomed by me with open arms. I am devastated and heartbroken for my loss, for the loss by everyone privileged to have known and loved him, and also for all those who will not get to meet Dylan in the future.
At this point, the thought of going on in life is pretty unimaginable, but let’s all be inspired by his love, joie de vivre, and kindness to move forward. Dylan has always been a blessing to me and I hope he will prove to be a guiding force from the other side. Dylan did not live long enough to realize, nor celebrate his amazing potential, nor his greatness.
Rest in Peace my darling, beautiful boy. You will always be remembered with so, so, so many emotions. But most of all, LOVE!
    Love always, MOM

Anyone who knows me, should know that I’ve been a huge fan of Pat Robitaille for years now. When I first discovered his music, shaggy was one of the first people I showed it too. Shaggy had a massive range of musical taste, and we didn’t always agree on what was considered “good” or “great” music. I can still hear him chirping me for liking Drake, and me chirping him for liking some unknown 90’s underground rapper – I know, his unknown 90’s rapper is probably way better than Drake.

With Pat’s music, Shaggy was all in. He appreciated it; maybe not as much as I did, but he knew I was really into it, and he embraced it. Cuz that’s who Shaggy was. Wow. Even writing WAS doesn’t seem real. Shaggy was a Brother. Any support or encouragement, and definitely any Ego-checking – Shaggy was there for you. He embodied the meaning of supporting his friends and family.

He and I were, and will always be brothers. His loss doesn’t make sense to me, but I know he’s in Paradise. He’s not here, which is dumbfounding. I want to drive to his house and blast Drake as loud as I can until he comes out ready to swing at me!

I Love you brother. I miss you so much. I almost wanted to tag you in a Drake video. But I’ll just let Pat play for us again, and I promise, We Will Meet Again.

    Happy 33rd Birthday Dylan Giovenazzo
D, It has been two and a half months, but it still does not feel real. I find myself staring at my phone, wanting to give you a call, and wish you a Happy Birthday James Reimer. I stay up a lot of nights because I get thinking about a random memory. Normally not a big event, but little memories. Not a day goes by, where you have not been on my mind.
The world feels quiet without the echo of your voice, but I will never stop hearing you. There will never be a part of life, where you will not be apart of it. In my life victories I will toast in your honour, in my defeats I will always be reminded that you would be there to pick me up. There will always be an empty seat at my table for you, my brother.
The last time I saw you in person, I was sitting in my truck parked at the Little Hawk Lake Marina watching you sail away off into the Horizon. Those who know me well, know that I consider the Hawk Lakes and Haliburton My Heaven. I like to think one day, Ill see you out there the day when Pa picks me up to go trout fishing. Until then, Happy Birthday my brother and Go Leafs Go!

I miss you and everytime I walk or look at my floor, which you installed for me, lol, I think of you. How many times do you think that is? Like a hundred times a week. You use to wrap me in a huge hug and call me mom whenever you came around and I miss that. Happy Birthday my funny, spazzy, crazy man!

    Happy birthday Dylan.
This was a very surreal weekend for me. I drove over 1000kms to bring this painting I had made for your mom, to honour you.
I’m more regretful than ever that I was in Thailand when Sam got married and that I missed this day. It looks like you may have had the best time EVER. The pictures are priceless. I also regret that I didn’t keep in better touch. I wish you would’ve known that I would have opened my door for you anytime you needed….but no sense living with regret….
Instead we remember your light, your enthusiasm, your laugh, your dedication. We remember you fondly, with bursting hearts and while tears continue to flow down our faces because you are gone…..we will not let your memory fade, we will make sure your legacy lives on.
It will live on in your nephews. It will live on in each of the hearts you have so profoundly touched. It will live on in the stars above…..and it will live on through music. After 20 long years of wanting to learn to play guitar…..I’m going to pull up my socks and learn…on your guitar. You will be my inspiration, my motivation, and I look forward to being able to connect with you on this level.
    So cheers Dyl.
Happy birthday, And thank YOU for this gift.
